Changing Domain Name

  1. I've purchased a non-wordpress.com domain name, and I want to make my wordpress site address this damain name: iljl.wordpress.com -- international-justice.com. I've already redirected the traffic, but I can't figure out how to get the name changed on wordpress and now I've got traffic from iljl.wordpress.com redirected to an empty site. Please help!

The blog I need help with is international-justice.com.

  2. If you already have a domain that you registered elsewhere, and you want to map that domain to your free hosted WordPress.com blog follow these instructions > http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/
After you make the domain mapping purchase and do the set up it can take between 24 - 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/

  3. Thank you, thistimethisspace.

Follow-up question so that I understand correctly; I'm learning I'm pretty ignorant at all of this.

If I purchased a domain name, I've "registered it elsewhere"?

If I "map that domain to my free hosted WordPress.com blog", I'm using the new address for the same wordpress site (simply changing the address so that people can search for international-justice.com rather than iljl.wordpress.com)?

This takes 24-72 hours to take hold, and during this time, anyone who attempts to find my blog is being redirected to a blank page with no content?

I feel as though I'm missing something.

  4. I suggest you wait for auxclass to chime in on this thread and help you.

  5. Thanks for your help thus far.

  6. To map an existing domain to your WordPress.com you can go to Store > Domains on your blog's dashboard and follow the steps there.

Please take a look at the following guide before going through the process.

Let us know if you need any help.

  7. Thank you. I think I'm getting my terminology wrong and I'm having problems because of it. I'm going to explain what I want to do and hopefully I can get my blog back up and running.

I have an existing blog (iljl.wordpress.com).

    1) I want to keep this blog (iljl.wordpress.com) with all of its contents. I want, however, people to be able to use the address international-justice.com to get to it. I want international-justice.com to direct to iljl.wordpress.com.

    2) I also want to keep those who are already visiting iljl.wordpress.com to be able to follow links they have already established. So, I want all iljl.wordpress.com links to remain working.

-- Yesterday, while trying to do this without really understanding what I was doing, I managed to map iljl.wordpress.com to international-justice.com and now if anyone tries to access my blog, they get redirected to a blank page at international-justice.com. (Big Problem!)

All I wanted was to change the name of my blog domain to something different from iljl.wordpress.com.

Please help me sort this out??

  8. Currently your international-justice.com domain isn't mapped to your WordPress.com blog. If you follow the instructions in my previous reply the domain will be mapped and both addresses (international-justice.com and iljl.wordpress.com) will point to the same blog.

  9. Thank you, Kardotim. I've tried again, following your instructions. I'm assuming it might take some time to take effect. Thanks!

  10. I have a similar question. I purchased a domain on Blog.com. It is Margber.com

I do not use that site anymore. I have reconstructed that blog, exactly in the same format, here at WordPress.com because WP is more reliable.

Can I make WordPress my Margber.com domain and delete that old site?

I am not sure of how to register and go through the motions in the steps of mapping. I asked for help at Blog.com weeks ago with no reply. (very unreliable over there with no communication).

Not sure if this is even possible, but would love my WordPress blog to have my Margber.com domain.

  11. @margber please open a new thread at http://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1

@kirstenfisher Looks like your domain is not pointing to WordPress.com name servers yet. Please go to your domain registrar's site and log into the control panel. You will need to update the name servers as below:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

For more information, please visit the help documentation provided by the registrar and our support page:

  12. A follow-up question, how long does it take for the change to take effect? Was thistimethisspace correct when she estimated 24-72 hours?

  13. Opps. I just saw your comment. I'm so confused.

  14. Normally it can take up to 72 hours. Have you changed the nameserver records already? If so, let's wait for a bit until they are fully propagated.

    Thank you for your patience.

  15. Thank you. I think I've done what I'm meant to. Fingers crossed. Thanks for yoru help -- and patience with me.

  16. Gosh has everyone quite reading or what? lol :D

This is what I posted at the top of this thread:

  17. Ok. I think it may be working now; however, I have a new question. The international-justice.com address links to the established blog (Yay!) at iljl.wordpress.com, but it redirects as opposed to changing the domain name. So, it still claims to be at iljl.wordpress.com. I know there must be some way of changing this since I have another site hosted by wordpress that is simply kirstenjfisher.com. Is there something more I need to be doing or am I simply being impatient. I'm pleased that my blog is accessible now, anyway! Thanks.

  18. timethief, it's not that I'm not reading, it's simply that I'm not understanding. I work in human rights and international law, and I don't find it nearly as confusing as all of this. :S

  19. The content is in the .wordpress.com blog and the URLs are being seamlessly redirected to the domain URL via domain mapping. On the Admin side of the blog the URL for media uploads will always be the .wordpress.com URL. No you cannot change that.

  20. I took a look and everything is working properly. I've set the international-justice.com as your primary domain now.

Feel free to contact us if you have any other questions.

  21. Thank you, Kardotim. Much appreciated. I'm very pleased with the way it worked out, and all the changes I wanted happened -- regardless of the fact that I still simply don't understand how or why. ;)

Thanks to all who offered advice.

  22. You're welcome :)
