Changing Menu Color: Twenty Eleven

  1. I can't figure out how to change the menu color from black to something that goes with my header and get rid of the search bar. Anyone know?

The blog I need help with is adventuresincalifornia.wordpress.com.

  2. You will require (1) css editing skills and (2) an annually renewable custom design upgrade. Have you purchased that upgrade?

  3. Nope, but I'll look into it. Thanks!

  4. Hello Timethief,

Since you seem to know how to customize Twenty Eleven...

Is it the same procedure using Twenty eleven from WP.org on a WP hosted site?

i.e. that we buy a custom design upgrade and then use css to make color and layout changes?

    Thanks for your help.

I'm finding the WP themes EXTREMELY limiting and frustrating, coming from blogger where I can customize EVERYTHING with colors, fonts, etc etc...

I have a website design clearly in mind, but I don't know which WP theme to use to make it, and I'm using an incredible amount of time just searching, trying out themes, and getting nowhere.

If I tell you exactly what I want design I have (and/or show you a drawing) could you tell me what WP theme I need to use?

Or else, do you know somebody who does know, who I could ask?

Thank you very much. cheers, Lash

  5. Is it the same procedure using Twenty eleven from WP.org on a WP hosted site?

The versions of the themes which have the same names like Twenty Eleven are different because WordPress.com and WordPress.org run on different software.

You cannot build or use your own custom theme built from scratch at WordPress.com. The only themes we can use are those found here > Appearance > Themes

This is a multiuser blogging platform. All blogs wearing the same theme are using the same underlying template and we cannot access the underlying files and edit templates or themes. http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/

There are two free themes, Sandbox and Toolbox designed to allow maximum flexibility for CSS editing and creating new “skins”. Toolbox is more modern and includes a lot of support for CSS3 and HTML5, so it is really only limited by your skills and knowledge.

If you have CSS editing experience the upgrade will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but will not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. It does not allow you to remove footer links to the theme designer or to WordPress.com. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes at WordPress.COM.

    Custom Design FAQs

  6. Hi, lashworldtour.

Is it the same procedure using Twenty eleven from WP.org on a WP hosted site?

i.e. that we buy a custom design upgrade and then use css to make color and layout changes?

Pretty much. The version of Twenty Eleven on WordPress.com is almost identical to it's WordPress.org counterpart (we have a tiny bit of extra CSS for some of our unique widgets and an equally tiny bit of code support for some of our plugins).

It also has almost as much flexibility as Toolbox (Toolbox has an extra sidebar on it) and just as much HTML5 support. Actually, almost all of our newer themes use Toolbox as a starting point so if you're looking for HTML5 support — you've got it. :)

If you post your mockups or idea here in the themes forum one of us can suggest a theme that'd make a great starting point.

    I hope that helps!

  7. That is exactly what i need! I'll go draw it out, scan it and... oh, how can I add it in the forum as a jpg? or other method?

    For now:

    1. The closest site I've found to what I want is: http://www.alittleadrift.com

but with pink and purple text/ menu bar instead of greeens, and with slide show under menu bar. and not second menu bar under, like that site.

    2. description:

*custom header I can upload my design

    * vibrant pink and purple fonts on white background

    * site across whole screen (or at least via same white background, looks like across whole screen)

    * wide menu bar, vibrant pink (width of grey 'smileys' bar below)

    * slide show under menu bar

    * main site panel (column) and right side bar

    * under slide show, row of posts with thumb photos

    on sidebar:

    * of course, the FB, TW, RSS buttons, search bar,

    * subscribe to newsletter, with free eBook on offer

    * my pic and brief profile

Any idea what WP theme will give me that? THANKS!

I can add a visual drawing scanned --> jpg if you tell me how to upload aphoto in a forum! cheers, Lash

  8. Hi, lashworldtour. I think any one of the premium themes will get you pretty close to what you're looking for.

    http://tractiondemo.wordpress.com/
    http://lifestyledemo.wordpress.com/
    http://linendemo.wordpress.com/
    http://deliciousmagazinedemo.wordpress.com/

or, for a free option, Twenty Eleven with it's showcase template.

A little Custom CSS (or in some cases one of the alternate color schemes in the theme itself) should take you the rest of the way.)

(I use CloudApp or Skitch for Sharing pics online.)

  9. Thanks very much themeshaper! Esp for the links to the themes.

I actually intend to do a WP.org at a hosted site. Do all of those themes work that way as well?

I tried out Twenty Eleven yesterday.. pretty close to what I want. yeah, maybe the css to change the menu bar and a few other things would work... just not enough time yest. to play around. will have to brush up on css to makemyself function properly...

But, I'd hate to pay for customization, only to later find out i can't do what I need, then ahve to go buy a premium theme afterall... :)

thanks for your help. cheers, lash

  10. If this will be for a self-hosted site, I might just start out with the Arthemia theme. That's the theme in use on the site you linked to.

    Good luck!
