Hi all. I just decided that I want to switch themes. I have a lot of CSS that I wrote for my current theme which of course will be useless if I make the change, so I'm going to have to do a lot of modification before I'm able to "go live" with the new theme. Is there any way to try things out WITHOUT having to take my blog offline? Thanks!

What I would do is save my modified stylesheet in whatever text editor I have (I am you, in this scenario, btw), make the switch to the new theme, and then start re-entering my CSS into the CSS editor while modifying WITHOUT saving, just with preview. The new theme will be live, but your CSS edits won't show until you save the style sheet.
If the timing is a concern for you, you can always plan to do this at a historically low-traffic time for your blog.
I am not sure if you can preview and write CSS for a theme without activating the theme first.

Great suggestions! Also, I think this was a great question and something I'd like to try to address in the tools themselves in the future. We do plan to add Custom CSS into the customizer/live preview feature later, and I think that will be very helpful to people in a similar situation in the future.
