I use the gallery setting in post format option in the twenty ten theme.
When the pages are listed dynamically the thumbnail that gets selected isn't always the best image to represent the post.
Is there a way or could there be a way of setting an image to use as a thumbnail the same way you select a featured image?
The blog I need help with is theianfox.wordpress.com.
The Gallery feature uses the first image uploaded as the front page/archive thumbnail, so upload that image first to your Post/Page, and then upload all the rest of the images to be included in that Gallery. You can rearrange image order afterwards in the Gallery settings.

I'm sorry, I'm going to have to take back what I said above. In the meantime I've been experimenting with different Gallery posts and it's not consistent in behavior.
So, yes, being able to choose which specific thumbnail represents the set would be handy.
Yeah I've noticed that.
I'd changed the post format of existing posts because I like to have a thumbnail on the category page. The image selection is al over the place.
