Chunk Theme - Adding images to the left hand column

  1. Hi
    I would like to add images to the left hand side of the Chunk Theme page so they sit beside each post/entry. Can anyone please help me?

    The blog I need help with is romerorecords.wordpress.com.

  2. CSS editing can only be used to change appearance not functionality. We cannot edit templates or themes of WordPress.com blogs. The CSS upgrade cannot be used to add a sidebar to pages which do not have one already. That would require hacking of the underling PHP script files, which we cannot do on free hosted WordPress.com blog .

    On the Chunk theme, there's a small column of nothing on the left side of the page (on the blog/home page it has the date and category in it, but on other pages it is blank). Is it possible to put anything, whether image or text, in this column? Or is it destined to remain blank...?

  4. @romerorecords, this is problematic. What you would have to do is add a background image to .entry-meta and then size the .entry-meta div so that the image would be below the title/date/categories. The problem is though, the number of categories can change, as can the length of the post title and this means in all likelihood, at some point your categories would be showing on the top of the image. A bottom margin could be added to the category links to accommodate the image.

    Here's the rub though. You would have to create a specific rule in the CSS each time that you added a new post if you wished to use different images for each post.

  5. @thetangosaloon, the site linked to your username is using Ambiru. We need a link to the site you are talking about please.

  6. @romerorecords, the other problem is getting this to show up on the main page as well as on the single-post pages. That might be tricky to do.

  7. Hi, sorry for the confusion, I'm running thetangosaloon but also co-running romerorecords... I didn't realise I was signed in as thetangosaloon until I clicked on 'submit' and then it wouldn't let me delete and re-post under the correct user name.

    Anyway, thanks very much for the response. The thing is, I think we're talking mostly about pages as opposed to posts. On the Chunk theme the posts all have date, category, etc but then on the pages, that column is completely empty and therefore a little useless. That's where we were hoping to put images, or if that was still too problematic perhaps we'd be able to just move the page title into that space..?

  8. Pages are somewhat easier. I assume that you have comments turned off for the pages so that no "leave a comment" link is present in the the left area. Your images have to be 190px wide to fit that area (and the element that is there) but can be as long as you want. If you want a different image on each page, then you need to create the page-id-specific rule for each page. The page ID for a page can be found by looking in the body selector for that page (source code).

    1. Get the page ID and replace XX in the selector below.
    2. Upload the image to the media library
    3. Replace IMAGE URL in the background declaration with the URL of the image you uploaded.
    4. Change height value to match height of actual image.

    .page-id-XX .hentry .entry-meta {
    background: url("IMAGE URL") no-repeat scroll 0 0 transparent;
    height: 500px;
    }
  9. Great thanks, will give it a go...
