I have a photoblog and I am noticing that the color reproduction on the photos when posted is not the same as the original photo stored on my computer, the effect seems to be the same in Mozilla and Safari (I have not tried IE). Is there a file type or color mode I should be using to ensure that the colors reproduce accurately when uploaded??

I think I just answered my own question - I resized the images on photoshop first to the exact right size for the monotone theme (560 x 747 portrait and 840 x 630 landscape) and then uploaded them to WP. The color reproduction is exactly the same now as the original photo. (and it looks so lovely with the matching background colors which are automatically generated for each post) I guess that there was less of a loss of color quality than when they were being resized from a huge photo.

You answered it right: images downsized by the wp uploader lose some sharpness and color. See here for an example:
