Combining Two Blogs

1. pilgrimstranger39

Is it possible to combine two blogs? I have three and am finding it difficult to keep up with posting to all three.

The blog I need help with is pilgrimstranger39.wordpress.com.

2. It is.

If you export your posts from the blog you want to retire and import them into the blog you want to keep, the blogs will be combined. Then you can just keep posting on the now combined blog.

Here's how you export: http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/

Here's how you import: http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/

Let me know if you have trouble!

Thanks, Liz.

It may take me some time to do all this, but I surely do appreciate the links to tell me how. You have no idea how nice it is to have help when you need it!

I will try to let you know when it is done.

4. I'm glad I could make your day a little brighter. Good luck!

5. When you do that export and import all the original links to the indexed content on the first blog will be broken and produce 404's (page not found) throughout the internet wherever they appear. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/08/05/avoid-creating-404-pages/ if you want to avoid doing that then note that the Site Redirect upgrade addresses that issue http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/

6. @timethief. I wouldn't have thought of that. Thanks for chiming in.

7. @lizthefair
You're welcome and you are doing great. Just keep bookmarking the tips I give you. lol :D

8. I'd be a fool not to ;)

LOL :D You are no fool. You are going to be a Happiness Engineer one day soon and that's my take on this.

10. From your mouth to God (or whomever's) ears :)

I ran into a bit of a glitch when exporting my files. The download was easy enough, but I could not see a way to save the XML file. I have done this once before when I almost lost a WordPress.org blog, so I am not afraid to try this. It is only that I need direction about how to save the download.

OK, I think I managed to save the export XML file. It had automatically been saved in downloads and not in temp as I feared. I managed to move it from downloads to my desktop and then imported it to my main blog. I really hope that will work (pictures, comments and all)! Right now the little sign says "Import WordPress Processing…
We're processing your import now and will send you an email when it's all done. If you don't hear from us within 24 hours, please contact support, and we'll get everything fixed."

I plan to let you know how it worked out.

13. So far, so good. Thanks for the update.

Today I got a "success" message. Thanks so much for walking me through this!

Timethief,

Since I had paid for the upgrade for my old blog, can that balance not be applied to removing all traces from the www? How should I go about finding out?

16. Hi, what is the URL of the site you are talking about with the www? I see you have this custom domain, helpmeettohim.org associated with helpmeet39.wordpress.com. Are you wanting to move that domain name over to the pilgrim site?

The blog http://pilgrimstranger.wordpress.com should not be involved in any way since it is on a different account.

I have *already combined* http://helpmeettohim.org
with http://pilgrimstranger39.wordpress.com. That job is finished.

The two blogs above were on one account with a domain called helpmeettohim.org. I had paid for upgrades for both blogs.

My question (before I delete the blog I merged is whether I might apply whatever upgrade price might be left on my account to deleting the blog without leaving empty 404 messages around the net.

Again, please note that blog http://pilgrimstranger.wordpress.com should not be involved in any way since it is not one of the two I merged.

BTW, I guess I am assuming that deleting the blog means I lose the rest of the upgrade cost, unless of course it can be applied to what is described here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/.

19. Hi there, the upgrades can be moved over to the new blog. First off a couple of questions.

1. Can you verify exactly what you want moved, and from where?
2. Can you verify which blog you want it moved to - and the username if that blog is under a different username?

I am not sure how I could make my request clearer. What else can I do but go ahead and delete the old blog myself and then perhaps let someone else worry about the stray 404 messages. Yesterday I wrote:

21. Sorry this has been confusing.

Based on what you've laid out here, I believe your best option is to have
http://pilgrimstranger39.wordpress.com/ redirect to http://helpmeettohim.org using the site redirect upgrade: http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/
(which I get is basically what you said earlier)

What I don't know is if the whatever you paid for the upgrade on http://pilgrimstranger39.wordpress.com can be applied to the site-redirect. @thesacredpath--is that something you can weigh in on?

Liz, thanks for taking time to evaluate my request. You are a winner. Maybe I should just wait to delete the blog I want to delete until someone has a chance to see whether my request can be granted.

Thanks again for taking time to read and evaluate. <3

Oops! Sorry my other avatar came up, but I am still the same person.

24. I would definitely wait as a redirect is your best bet. Even if that doesn't pan out, I would recommend leaving http://pilgrimstranger39.wordpress.com live and just write a post (and maybe put a note in a text widget in your sidebar) that says you are now blogging at http://helpmeettohim.org. That should also avoid the 404s (since the posts will still exist, they will just be on the old blog.)

The re-direct is better as it makes sure that everyone gets funneled to the "new" site but leaving the old blog up at least doesn't leave anyone high and dry.

OK, one more glitch in this process:
I started to delete the http://pilgrimstranger39.wordpress.com and discovered this:
Delete Site

Warning! You cannot delete a site if it has a domain registration upgrade because you need access to the site in order to get to the domain manager.

If you do not want to use your site any more please make it private. Other users won’t be able to visit the site but you can still access the Dashboard so you can get to the domain manager.

Now what?

I just realized that the blog I merged with the one I want to keep both have the same address. Both are attached to the domain http://www.helpmeettohim.org.

26. pilgrimstranger39

OK, I just made http://helpmeettohim.org private and I will wait until I hear about the other request.

I really do hope that move does not affect the main blog, but it might since it also is attached to the http://helpmeettohim.org address.

27. I put the modlook tag back on this thread because I think it would be helpful to have someone look into your account to see which upgrades are attached to what.

That having been said, there is no big need for urgency here. All the posts on http://pilgrimstranger39.wordpress.com have been copied (not moved) to http://www.helpmeettohim.org. That means they appear on both sites. You probably don't want to keep things that way long term because of problems with duplicate content, but having both blogs live for a little bit isn't a big problem.

If you are uncomfortable with that and don't want both to be visible, it makes much more sense to make http://pilgrimstranger39.wordpress.com private and http://helpmeettohim.org public since http://helpmeettohim.org is the public site that has all of your content.

Does that make sense?

28. pilgrimstranger39

It makes perfect sense, except it is the opposite of what you think. Sorry!

I merged Http://www.helpmeettohim.org into http://pilgrimstranger39.wordpress.com.

I know; that was a foolish move, because the http://helpmeettohim.org was the dominant one. Should I go back and move everything the other way? Would that help at all?

29. nope, I just misunderstood. You should be able to have your domain mapping transferred to http://pilgrimstranger39.wordpress.com and then do what you want with the other site (based on the options we discussed earlier).

We should however stop commenting on the thread because doing so makes you lose your place in line for the the "modlook" tag (they do the ones with the earliest timestamp so the people who have been waiting the longest get "seen" first.)

Liz, you are sharp and attentive too. I appreciate that very much!
I went back to some old sent messages in my email and found what used to be my footer.

Daughters of Sarah <http://helpmeet39.wordpress.com/>
Muliebral Viewpoint <http://pilgrimstranger39.wordpress.com/>

I realized that the blog "Daughters of Sarah" is able to be accessed by more than one link--the one you see above and the domain name (helpmeettohim.org). I really think that is the problem with understanding each other up 'till now. Daughters of Sarah is the blog I merged into Muliebral Viewpoint. You can see the link similarities.

I am happy you are so on the ball and happy to wait for a resolution to the problem.
