Comment movement to a different BLOG

  1. Hi,
I am new to blogging. At my Bog site, I have kind of initiated 2 mini book series and blog posting on different topics. Now that I learnt that I could register another blog, I am wanting to post the existing content to different blogs without having to go through manually posting and creating.
    Is it possible?
Is it possible to link all in one homepage where the readers pick lings to other blogs?
Also, what would be the fate of posted comments on the existing blog; if I choose to move them?
    Thank you in advance.

The blog I need help with is readolivia.wordpress.com.

  2. Sorry, Blog Site.

  3. Now that I learnt that I could register another blog, I am wanting to post the existing content to different blogs without having to go through manually posting and creating.
    Is it possible?

Yes, and it's easy to do. You can export all contents out of the first blog using this function > Dashboard > Tools > Export

    There you will see this:
When you click the button below WordPress will create an XML file for you to save to your computer.

This format, which we call WordPress eXtended RSS or WXR, will contain your posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, and tags.

Once you’ve saved the download file, you can use the Import function on another WordPress blog to import this blog.

Then you can import them into the new blog. In the new blog (on WordPress.com), go to Tools -> Import and upload the XML file you downloaded.

  4. Set the new blog as "private" temporarily. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

Once you have imported the export file you created into the new blog you can delete any and all posts that you do not want in the new blog and the comments on the deleted posts will disappear along with them. Then when you have the new blog containing only the contents you want in it you can change the blog visibility back to "public".

Is it possible to link all in one homepage where the readers pick lings to other blogs?

You can cross link from one blog to the other. You can do this by placing a text widget with the link to the new blog at the top of your sidebar and visa versa.

Or you could create a static Page is an index in the original blog containing the title links to all the posts you moved to the new blog on it.

Or, depending on the theme you use you may be able to use this trick to link between the two blogs. http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/03/26/page-tabs-as-external-links/

  5. A wonderous Thanks to you Timethief.. I'll sit on weekend and do it.. You have suggested resolution of a huge issue..

  6. TT, I still learn stuff every day reading your posts.

  7. @raincoaster- you are so right..

    @Timethief- Thank you :)

  8. @readolivia
    Happy blogging. :)

P.S. In the original post you made to create this thread will you please mark it as "Resolved"? Thanks. :)

  9. Could you also help me with this-
    1) exporting wont affect my original blog
    2) unless I manually delete, no post would disappear?

  10. If I write- its "resolved" here, that would do it? Or do I need to click or check something. sorry, I am very new here; but would remember it for all times to come..
    Thanks in advance..

  11. That's correct, unless you delete it it will all still be there. It's a good idea to set the first blog Private, that way it serves as a backup!

And you should be able to go to the original post and edit it to set it as resolved now.

  12. @ raincoaster: Thank you yet again..

  13. You're welcome. One reason to set it Private is so it doesn't interfere with your new site's search engine ranking. I've set each of the posts on my old WP.com blog to Private and left a static page saying "Go to our new site" up. It works well.
