Why can't my friends comment on my blog? After they put in their e-mail address and name and press submit for the comment, it asks to fill in their wordpress account username and password, and they don't have one!

Now, if someone tries to comment with an email address that's attached to a WordPress.com account, they'll need to sign into WordPress.com before they can comment.
If commenters have forgotten their password they can request a reset:
http://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpasswordNote that you don't have to require your commenters to use an email address, it's an option under Settings -> Discussion in your blog's dashboard.
