Comments email address

  1. I can't change the email address left in my comments to be the same as the one in Settings.
It looks like the problem has been there for a while. The address is accepted on the Settings page but comments continue to show a different email address which I wasn't aware I was displaying, and which I had thought I had removed from my WP account some months ago. I am not at all happy that I've ended up leaving comments using an email address I didn't know I was giving to strangers.

I just tried again and put another address again into Settings, which was again accepted, but I made a test comment on my own blog, and the unwanted email address was *still* showing up.

The blog I need help with is dilettanterie.wordpress.com.

  2. What did it show when you went back to the settings page after leaving the comment? Was it the old address or the new one?

  3. Oh, and you may have better luck changing it right at Gravatar.com, now that I think of it. Assuming you have a gravatar.

  4. The new address shows when returning to the Settings page. I removed the unwanted address months ago and a different one was showing in Settings. That's why I didn't know the old one was displaying with comments before.

    I don't have Gravatar.

  5. I am bumping this up because I still don't have an answer on how to sort out this email address problem.

I would also like the comments made on strangers' blogs with that address to be deleted (because I did not know I was using it) but I understand WordPress is extremely hands-off in such matters so this is unlikely.

But as it is I would not want to make any more comments on WP because I cannot currently control which email address shows up.

  6. WordPress.com accounts and Gravatar accounts are one in the same. http://blog.gravatar.com/2013/04/03/gravatar-and-wordpress-com-together-forever/

You have two separate email address settings.

Blog notifications for the admin (like comment moderation, Likes, new subscriptions, etc) are sent to the email address at Settings -> General in the Dashboard.

Personal notifications (like comments on your post, subscription emails, and upgrade renewals) are sent to the email address at Users -> Personal Settings in the Dashboard.

Try changing it at http://wordpress.com/#!/settings/ first.

If that doesn't work, try Users -> Personal Settings in your blog's Dashboard.

  7. Thank you for your swift reply.

    http://wordpress.com/#!/settings/
I don't think I'd seen that bit before, and I have just changed the email address on there as well.

I'm confused though because older comments (eg by me on my own blog) show a different email address which I'm sure I only ever changed under Settings --> General.

But anyway.... That first screen also states
    Email address:
    Will not be publicly displayed

    and
    Web address:
Shown publicly when you comment on blogs and in your Gravatar profile.

which seems a bit misleading given that it has been displaying that very email address to blog owners I don't know.

  8. http://wordpress.com/#!/settings/ I don't think I'd seen that bit before, and I have just changed the email address on there as well.

This is a newer dashboard that is an alternative to the traditional dashboard under /wp-admin/.

Email address: Will not be publicly displayed and Web address: Shown publicly when you comment on blogs and in your Gravatar profile.

which seems a bit misleading given that it has been displaying that very email address to blog owners I don't know.

The email address of a commenter is only displayed to the site administrator, who must be logged into their dashboard to view it. It is not displayed publicly.

Let me know if you still need any help with this, or if the email has already been correctly updated. Thanks.

  9. I'm having a similar problem. I recently changed my blog URL, but my comments all still list my old URL, even though I've changed it under settings. Does it just take a while for the change to go through? Or will old comments just never change? My new comments have the correct URL, so I suspect the latter.

  10. Matthew - your suspicion is right, the URL on old comments you've previously made doesn't change.
