   Recently, in order to limit spam from one or two annoying regulars I checked the 'users must be registered and logged in to comment' box on the settings/discussion page. It worked! But it also made it harder for some of my regulars to comment so after a few days I reversed the change. Now, comments from most of my regular commentators are placed in the Spam folder and bizarrely when I reply to them (after approving them) my replies are also transferred to my own Spam folder. I have no idea why this is happening or how to resolve it.

   The blog I need help with is lensscaper.wordpress.com.

   Spam comes in waves. Also if you approved a single spam comment on a post then the spammers will target your post and hammer it over and over again.

   The vast and overwhelming majority of all so-called information on the internet is spam. Over 80% of all so-called comments submitted to .wordpress.com blogs every day are spam.

   The worst of all spam containing malware and viruses is not sent to us. It's removed as it could bring down many blogs if opened.

   On the spam that Akismet catches it takes only seconds to click "empty spam" and you don't even have to click "empty spam" if you don't want to. Akismet will maintain comments it has caught for 15 days from the time they were received, and then it will delete the comment automatically.

   If you get spam that slips by Akismet then mark it as spam (do not delete it) and over time Akismet will learn it's spam.

   I understand exactly what you are saying Timethief but you do not answer the question I raise which is why long term bona fide WordPress bloggers are now regarded as Spammers when I restored my settings to the previous settings that were allowin them to comment and they were fully Approved nor why my replies to those bona fide bloggers are also repeatedly placed in my spam folder. This should not be happening.
