Reader comments are not displaying for me (neither via the post page, or the dashboard), despite following the correct procedure under 'settings>discussion'.
Also, notifications on-screen from other members are not displaying what they're saying, so I'm unable to reply because I have no idea what they've typed.

It looks like no readers have attempted to comment on your blog. Are you sure your readers are commenting on the correct blog?

I believe so - not that I'm all that 'tech-savvy', but it appears as though they are. I'm also unable to read any of the little orange notifications that pop up at the top of the screen when a member sends me a message - it just shows me their username, but not any comments...so this seems to be a two-fold problem.
I think you're confusing Comments with Likes in the notifications menu.
Take a look at the notification for "How to Escape Cults. . . " That's a comment, more specifically a pingback, but it is a comment you can reply to.
Now, take a look above it on "humanity777 liked your post." That's a Like, not a comment. It just means that someone clicked the Like button for the post.

Yes, I can see the likes versus the one comment - and I do understand the difference...but it's not showing me the comment at all. Yes, it will allow me to reply, but at no stage does it tell me what comment he/she has made, so I can reply appropriately, if that makes sense?
It also doesn't explain why I can't see or reply to members via the orange notification thing up top, either - the same thing is occurring there; I can see their blog/user name, but not what they've typed, so it must seem to them as though I'm ignoring them :(

The comment is just a pingback, so the content of the comment is what you see surrounded by [...].
The user linked to one of your posts in their post, and an excerpt surrounding the link in their post was provided as a comment. You can reply to that via the Notifications menu, but it would be best to visit their post and comment there.

That's because they are Likes, they are not comments. The only comment in your notification menu is the pingback on "How to Escape Cults. . . "
