Comments w/o having own blog on WP?

  • We have a blog that connects to our FB etc When someone goes to our blog and wants to comment on a post, it asks them to sign in and if they dont have a WP account it says they need to set one up. Not everyone wants to start their own blog! What can we do about this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • You can change your settings on the dashboard under Settings->Discussion so that anyone can comment. That’s apparently not what you have it set as now.

Note that if someone’s email address is already associated iwth a WordPress account, WP will ask them to sign in so that they can ensure it’s not someone pretending to be them.

  • Thanks-We have done that, and the box is checked. It seemed like it was working for a while but then reverted back. Do you have to do this for EACH post?

  • This page > Settings > Discussion is where you set up defaults for comments.

    Discussion Settings
    Other comment settings
_Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
_Users must be registered and logged in to comment

Note that the prompt to submit and email address and a website URL will still appear, but providing an email address and logging in are not required, and you cannot change this so the prompt does not appear.

You can post instructions for your visitors in a text widget if you wish to set up anonymous commenting. That’s easy to do. You copy and paste this into a text widget:

Readers: Note that the email address and logging in prompts do appear for comments on this blog, but providing an email address and logging in are not required.

P.S. Do be sure to set up full comment moderation ie. “An administrator must always approve the comment” because anonymous commenting is bound to increase the amount of spam your blog will receive.
