Comments/Spam

  1. Is it possible that some legitimate commentors are getting nabbed as spam? Several friends have tried to comment, and/or subscribe, but I never receive notification. Is there advice I can give to friends who have been unsuccessful?

The blog I need help with is darlinblog.wordpress.com.

  2. do you mean email notifications ? if yes then make sure you have the email notifications enabled. I have never came through such incident.

  3. I have just checked my spam box and seen a good comment marked as spam. I don't always check my spam box, so this probably isn't the first time that someone replied with a good comment and it was marked as spam.

  4. @gettingheatlthyingod: I'm curious, what's the "good comment"? Could you provide us with a link to it?

  5. Huh. I can't usually access what's marked as Spam.

  6. @darlinblog: If you wish to be able to check your spam, you need to go to Settings>Discussion, check the option "Don’t discard spam on old posts", scroll down and click Save Changes.

    As for your original post:
    a) In Settings>Discussion again, make sure the options next to "E-mail me whenever" are checked.
    b) Akismet may mistake a legitimate comment for spam, but that's very rare; in my blog, for instance, it has happened 4 times in a total of more than 8000 spam comments so far.

I have the same question - a comment which appears legit was in spam box today, I un-spammed it, and it is in pending now. I looked at the author's blog - not my thing, but apparently inoffensive - no adverts, no hate-content or that kind of thing. Is there anywhere where we can see WHY akismet spammed it? That's what I was trying to learn here in the Forums (no luck in support or the Akismet site so far).. Any suggestions? If you can look at my dashboard - it's in pending coment queue (http://malvedos.wordpress.com). The blogger who commented is also on wordpress, as you'll see - I hesitate to post the link, in case it is toxic some how, but if you want me to, I will...

No I'm sorry there isn't. Please do not post the link. Instead I'd like to suggest that you use this contact link > http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

Ok, thanks Timethief! will do! take care.

  11. Best wishes to you. :)

  12. When I've said good comment, I've meant legit comment. I don't why it was put in my spam box. Maybe wordpress know something that I don't. I'm going to try and contact them and find out. This morning their contact was down.

  13. @gettinghealthyingod: Be particularly cautious of particularly vague comments that simply say stuff "Fantastic" or "Great article". More often than not, they are spam. Details here:

  14. Thanks airodyssey, I have so many of those in my spam box and that's where they stay, until they are deleted.

  15. I've contacted the support team in regards to a comment that was marked as spam and the reasons I was given for the comment being spam, I can see why they have marked it spam. It didn't really have anything to do with my post, even though the person was talking about the same lady that I was exercising to. The person's link lead to a buyer's website.

I know that sometimes good things can be marked as spam, especially in email. I had some emails from people I know that were sent to my spam box by mistake.

Just be careful. I have my comment set to where if it's not spam, I have to approve the messages.
