Create/Edit Theme free?

  1. So im sort of new to this theme buisness and i dont really know what a theme is made up of but reading some sites they say its in code like this one says its in code and i downloaded the theme file and it came up with 4 .php files and a .css

so I was just wondering if it is possible to create and/or edit a current theme for free.
Because i really like the theme Mystique but i want to edit, add and delete some things.
    So i've got three questions:
    1. Is it possible to download a theme (mystique in my case) as a template or in code watever and edit it for free?
and 2. how do i test it because the website above said you upload it to /wp-content/themes/ etc. but thats for wordpress.org so is there a program i can download and test it or can i send it to someone to test it for me.
    3. if i do succeded to create one or edit one how do i upload it because this website said you can post it in the themes forum but what do i post it as??

    thx so much! :D

WordPress themes are written in PHP script and we cannot edit those files here at wordpress.COM. This is a multi-user platform which means we all share the same underlying theme and wordpress files. Any change by one person would change it for everyone using that theme.

If you have CSS editing experience, you can get the Custom Design upgrade, which will allow you to stylize the themes here, but it does not allow you to change the functionality. CSS is also themes specific so you cannot use the CSS from one theme with another theme. Before buying the upgrade, you can go to appearance > Custom Design and wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try out changes before you buy the upgrade.

You can install wordpress on your personal computer and the instructions for that vary from system to system and there are other things you need to install as well. There you could test your theme, but you still would not be able to upload it here at wordpress.COM. We cannot add our own themes here.

Search on the internet for something like wordpress local install and you should find instructions and the software you would need to install to install wordpress.

  3. kk thx but this website says at the bottom

We are always looking to add new themes to WordPress.com. Please feel free to request the addition of any theme. You can either contact support with the request or drop a line in the Themes Forum.
    .
So can i post a theme i made that isn't mystique in the forums and wait for wordpress.com to upload it because thats what the quote means to me

Yes, but you cannot add your own theme here. It would have to go through a full approval process, if they decide to look at it. I've seen themes that were requested not get implemented for a year, and many that have been requested never show up. If staff decide to take a look at your theme, don't get impatient.

If is really well designed, has lean, tight, strong, and W3C compliant markup and CSS with no security issues, that would be a big plus.

  5. kk thx so much.

i went to the digitalnature website (creator of mystique) and i found that you can download mystique and there is a newer version available for download and i downloaded it and i found out that it has what I want edited (google + added)

So i was woundering if wordpress.com could update the Mystique theme which can be downloaded here
    And digitalnature's website is here

Theme Staff do monitor threads in the forum and will respond to you when they can.

  7. Hi jezh42,

We don't have any plans to update the Mystique theme at this time. The version of Mystique on WordPress.com differs from the version available from digitalnature because we've adapted the theme to make it work on the WordPress.com platform.

i downloaded it and i found out that it has what I want edited (google + added)

Do you want your users to be able to share your blog posts on Google+? If so, you can include sharing buttons (including Google+) at the bottom of your posts here at WordPress.com. See this support document on Sharing for more information.

    I hope this helps. :)

  8. thx i added that but i would like the little buttons that appear at the top left when you hover over them the pop out
    found in
    mystique\mods\SocialMediaIcons\icons

  9. @jezh42

As michiecat said, we don't have any plans to update Mystique on wp.com at this point. So her suggestion (using sharing buttons at the bottom of the post) is the only way to allow your reader to share your posts at the moment.

Thanks for letting us know the theme's update. We will keep it in mind.
