I want to create a link from a blog post to a pdf or image in the media library, but I don't want to insert the image into the blog. I don't know exactly how to do this because when I click on the link icon in the toolbar, it wants to know the url. If I'm on the right path, what url do I choose for a particular item in my media library. Remember, I don't want to insert the image, just provide the link.

You have to provide some anchor text or an image, then select it to get the link icon, then, yes, put in the link of the PDF or image. It won't show as an image, it'll show as a link.
