Creating an image widget

  1. I can't import a picture from my Media Library to the image widget, although I've typed in the image URL. All I get is a blank rectangle with a red x. Why is this?

The blog I need help with is wordsfromjohn.wordpress.com.

  2. First, you mistyped it (you typed .cm instead of .com), second it's not the image URL, it's the URL of an attachment page with the image on it. Image URLs always end with the filetype (.jpg or .png etc). The URL of an image you upload is found in this box ("File URL"):
    http://en.support.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/img-settings-cannot-edit.png

This is the URL you should have used:
    http://wordsfromjohn.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/convergence-cover-2.jpg

Note: This image is 788px wide while your sidebar is only 193px wide. The theme will automatically downsize it when you add the image widget, but a) images downsized by WP lose some color and sharpness, b) some bad browser versions don't understand the downsizing and may display the image in its original size or distorted. Ideally you should use an image editing application to downsize a copy of the image to the right width for your sidebar then upload that version.

  3. Ideally you should use an image editing application to downsize a copy of the image to the right width for your sidebar then upload that version.

Re-stating since SO many people miss that concept all across the web.

  4. Many thanks for the help justpi. As you've probably gathered, I'm a complete dummy about computers. I put it down to being an aged person! I'll try my image as is, but if it doesn't work do as you suggest and downsize a copy.
Could I ask you or other members one other thing, please? How do I create a link from the widget image to the Convergence post of my blog? Thanks again.

  5. You're welcome, and no, this is a common mistake among inexperienced WP users.

To make the image link to the post, you copypaste the URL of the post into the "Link URL" field of the widget. The URL of the post is this:
    http://wordsfromjohn.wordpress.com/2013/01/25/convergence/

I don't know what you're seeing now, but I'm seeing a slice of the image in its original size. If you won't downsize it as suggested above, then at least enter appropriate numbers in the width and height fields of the widget: they should be 193 and 291, respectively.

  6. Hello again justpi. Thanks for the second reply. I've succeeded in downsizing my image, by trial and error in my version of Paint to 186x280 (which I know is slightly smaller than nec. now) but I can't figure out what the URL should be now - nothing works. I'd be tearing my hair out if I had any left. I'll give it up for tonight and try again, including linking, tomorrow!
BTW: are you in Greece? I'm seeing visitors/views from there all of a sudden. Thanks again for the help.

  7. You upload the new version from your computer to your blog via Media > Add New, click "Edit", copy the File URL, paste that URL into the File URL field of the widget.
The URL of the post must be pasted into the Link URL field, not the File URL field.
    Yes, I'm in Greece.
