I am trying to customize a new blog and can't even get the instructions in the guiding documents to work ("add widget to sidebar section on right" - there is no sidebar section!)
As an experienced computer user (and non-web software developer, this is very frustrating.
Please help me figure out how to get this thing started.

I see you got it working. FYI the best place to start is http://learn.wordpress.com which if nothing else will get you used to the way WP.com explains itself in support docs.
Thanks for being ready to help. It really did turn out to be a question of how to understand WP's manner of language.
