I have attempted to load a custom header with terrible results. No matter what combination I try, I cannot load a clear pic to Word Press. I have used one of the default header sizes only to find that it is too small. What is the best size for a custom header on the twenty ten theme?

We need a link to the site, but in general the best thing to do is to create, size and crop the image to the exact size required by the theme you are using before you upload it. The size can be found on the appearance > header page in your dashboard. Do not rely on the wordpress resize and crop function if you want the best quality as it doesn't do a very good job.
Also, different image file types are better for different types of images. JPG is best for photographic images and images with complex gradients and such. PNG and GIF are better at graphic type images with text and/or large swaths of colors.
