i am using the twenty eleven template and tried to add a custom link (linking) to my photos but it doesn't show up onthe menu bar.
It currently has 3 tabs - home, and 2 "about me" pages.
I've tried to remove one "about me" page but the custom link still doesn't show up

It looks like you got the custom menu created properly at Appearance > Menus. Now what you want to do is set it as your theme's primary navigation in the "Theme Locations" module on that page. Once you update that the custom menu will appear on your site.
