Delete hidden file?

  1. There's a PDF file showing up in Google that indicates that it's posted on my blog, but I can't find it anywhere on my blog. How do I delete it?

The blog I need help with is plasticbodies.wordpress.com.

  2. Look in your Media Library - that has all the files / pictures attachments etc even ones not used in Posts or Pages anymore -

  3. It's not there and I never uploaded it to the blog. I need to delete it. When I click the file in Google it just opens the PDF. It says that the file is located at: plasticbodies.files.wordpress.com2013/02/jhp511a875ac5ab2.pdf

  4. See here first bulk delete images & media http://en.support.wordpress.com/media/deleting-files/#bulk-deletion
Then here's how to permanently delete Trash from your uploads folder >
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/trash/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/trash/#deleting-permanently

IMPORTANT NOTE: Deleting blog content does not remove it from the SERPs (search engine page results). Google and Bing only clear their caches of deleted indexed content that produces a 404 (page not found) every 3 - 6 months.

  5. Don't know - I have flagged this for the staff to look at your blog - they are a bit backed up now with requests however

  6. Thank you for looking into this further. I could access any trash folder to delete anything (and couldn't find a trash folder anywhere, actually). I'm absolutely sure I didn't upload this file to my blog, so it's associated with the blog somehow without being uploaded by me.

  7. Well, if your blog is http://plasticbodies.wordpress.com/, the PDF had been uploaded to it; correct URL:
    http://plasticbodies.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/jhp511a875ac5ab2.pdf

@TT: Images and PDFs are deleted at once: there's no trash folder for them.

  8. Justpi: yes, that's my blog. Thanks for correcting the URL.

  9. Ok, I think I know what happened. I believe I accidentally uploaded the PDF to my media library, then inserted it mistakenly into a post. However, I never published the post and immediately deleted the PDF from my media library. Now I'm disturbed to find that the PDF is coming up in Google search and it was never even published online.

This PDF is under copyright and I do not have permission to post it. Please help.

  10. @justpi
    Thanks for that.

  11. @plasticbodies

However, I never published the post and immediately deleted the PDF from my media library.

Did you permanently delete the post from trash?

Beyond that we can't help you. All search engines issues are between you and Google.

  12. TT: yes, it's permanently deleted. But I think the bigger issue now is that an unpublished file of mine was made publicly available and continues to be available. So, should I conclude that my media library is not mine, but actually publicly accessible?

  13. I'll tag this thread for a Staff response. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting

  14. @tt Ok, thanks.

  15. @TT: "Did you permanently delete the post from trash?"
Deleting a post has nothing to do with the media library.

@plasticbodies: Deleting a file from your media library doesn't immediately remove it from WP's servers. You'll have to wait.

  16. @justpi

How long does one have to wait?

  17. @justpi
It's good to know that it will disappear eventually, but still disturbing that the file has effectively been published without my consent.

  18. still disturbing that the file has effectively been published without my consent.

    Agreed.

  19. Well technically it wasn't "published". It was indexed prior to publication and that's what I found weird because you said you did not publish the post.

  20. @tt. Yes, that's what seems to have happened. Exactly.

  21. Allow me to doubt that: on Feb 22 you published a post titled "Cover for Levinas Unhinged".

  22. @justpi

Yes, I published an image, NOT a PDF of the entire book.

  23. To be clear: an image of the cover, not of the contents.

  24. Yes I know (image "lu-cover.jpg"). So? You previously wrote (emphasis mine):

I believe I accidentally uploaded the PDF to my media library, then inserted it mistakenly into a post. However, I never published the post and immediately deleted the PDF from my media library.

  25. @justpi

I composed a post. Uploaded the PDF to media library and inserted into the post. Never published it. Then I deleted pdf from the post, deleted it from media library, uploaded jpg to media, inserted into post, and published.

Want to tell me how the PDF got online and indexed in Google? Thanks.

  26. Sure: it got online and indexed because you published it.

Your latest version is: uploaded file, inserted into post, deleted file etc, published post.
Previous version was: uploaded file, inserted into post, never published post.
First version was: "I'm absolutely sure I didn't upload this file to my blog".
So I'm becoming absolutely sure you don't remember what you did or you don't want to admit it. Your changing the story each time you're presented with a fact makes the latest version even more unlikely than it would be by itself.

For a more convincing reply you can wait till a staff member examines your blog and tells you what really happened.

  27. Yes, the post was online, with the pdf. Further discussion on this issue is pointless among us volunteers. I'll leave the modlook in case staff has anything to add but close this topic now.
