Deleting a Blog and trying to create a new one with same name

    Hi!

    I created a blog whose name was MyFirstBlog.wordpress.com.

    As it was my first blog created under WorPress, I decided to use it to get used to WordPress starting to make some experimentations before putting it in production.

    After its creation, I performed the steps that follow:

    (a) Registered a domain (MyFirstBlog.com) and purchased the upgrade for domain mapping (Upgrades > Upgrades).

    (b) Mapped http://MyFirstBlog.com to point to MyFirstBlog.wordpress.com (Upgrades > Domains > Add a Domain). It worked fine.

    (c) To check how modifying the CSS would impact in the blog’s layout, started to experiment with it (Presentation > Edit CSS). Before that I purchased the “Custom CSS” upgrade (Upgrades > Upgrades)

    After that I clicked over “Add to existing CSS (View stylesheet)” in Presentation > Edit CSS, and saved the style sheet that was downloded to me, and presented in notepad (Windows), to a file in my computer.

    Next I made a few modifications and checked how it appears. After some changes I noticed my header image had disapeared. Thought it was something wrong that I’ve made, so I pasted the saved CSS (the template’s original) into the edit CSS area and saved it. Viewed the blog, and for my surprise the image didn’t show up again (although all the other changes get back to template’s default.

    Interestingly, when I go Presentation > Themes the image is presented in the “Current Theme” snapshot.

    After trying to upload again the original header image (wich I also saved before starting modifications) it didn’t show up again.

    Then I decided to delete blog MyFirstBlog. Did all steps, received the deletion confirmation email, confirmed it etc, and it was successfully deleted. After that I tried to register another blog with the name MyFirstBlog and received the message “Sorry, that blog already exists!”.

    (d) For my surprise, when I used URL http://www.MyFirstBlog.com (the mapped one – step (b)) it showed up the previous blog (i.e. the one that was deleted - MyFirstBlog).

    (e) As I coldn’t recreate the blog named MyFirstBlog, created another one named TheNewBlog and repeated step (d) above (used URL http://www.MyFirstBlog.com). It didn’t showed TheNewBlog but, again, the deleted MyFirstBlog.

    (f) Tried using the URL http://TheNewBlog.wordpress.com and it showed TheNewBlog. That was ok.

    (g) Repeated step (b), mapping http://MyFirstBlog.com to point to pinky.wordpress.com.

    (h) Tried using the URL http://MyFirstBlog.com and (for my surprise) it showed MyFirstBlog (the one I deleted) again.

    Why I can’t create (recreate?) again a blog named MyFirstBlog, after I deleted it (“Sorry, that blog already exists!”)?

    Why (if I deleted the MyFirstBlog) it still shows up when I use URL http://www.MyFirstBlog.com?

    What can I do to use the name “MyFirstBlog” again as one of my blogs? (or I just can’t?)

    Did I do something wrong, or that’s the way WordPress works?

    What happened to the name MyFirstBlog? No one can use it any more?

    Just to end: when I go to Upgrades > Upgrades, it doesn’t lists the “domain mapping” upgrade to be purchased, that’s ok, because I already purchased that option as listed in step (a), but it lists “Custom CSS” option as one upgrade to be purchased (again), but I already had purchased it in step (c). Why is that?

    I would appreciate any thoughts and help.

    Checking the forum messages, got to thread "Deleted Blog Name" (http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=12368&page&replies=4), where thistimethisspace points to two FAQ entries:

    That answers my question "What can I do to use the name MyFirstBlog again as one of my blogs? (or I just can’t?)".

    Now I know I can't do that (albeit the reason I had to delete my blog I believe doesn't fits well in the explanation "Why?" in http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/07/recycling-blog-names/ IMHO). But that's fine.

    But still doesn't answers question "(h) Tried using the URL http://MyFirstBlog.com and (for my surprise) it showed MyFirstBlog (the one I deleted) again." Why http://MyFirstBlog.com still points to the deleted blog? Why is that?

    There is some other thing I must do in order to map that URL to "TheNewBlog"? Did I lost the capability to map to a new domain?

    In the meanwhile I changed the DNS pointing to WordPress to point to another place and am waiting for that information to propagate to see what happens.

    I apologize for my posts, but I'm new here and still am a bit confused.

    Just for reference, next time state your questions at teh beginning of your post and then go into details. I'm sitting here trying to figure out what specifically the question is.

    You've found the answer for the reuse of the blog name. Sorry if you disagree. Gotta admit though that you are told this a number of times during the process of deleteing that you can't reuse the name or be reused by anyone else.

    How are you doing the mapping of the domain? Is this via the domain mapping program here or through a process of your registar. Also what specifically is teh blog here and the domain that you're trying to map? All we can do is make guesses without that information.

    Please pardom me for my massive reply, but want to show you that I tried to follow, as possible as my limitations permited, to act accordingly with given instructions.

    Sorry for that, pardom me if I'm still not acquainted with this forum's rules of behavior. I'll try to act the way it should be next time.

    The question is: Why PinkyLotusBlog.com still shows PinkyLotusBlog?

    Remarks: I wanted to map the newlly created blog (PinkyBlog) to domain PinkyLotusBlog.com. Before that it I mapped blog PinkyLotusBlog (the one I deleted) to PinkyLotusBlog.com.

    Its via the program here.

    In my registrar (Network Solutions) I did what tells FAQ "Domain Mapping" (http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/10/domain-mapping/), if I understood it ok. Changed the nameserver as below:

    Domain Name: PINKYLOTUSBLOG.COM

    Previous DNS Name Servers:
    NS65.WORLDNIC.COM
    NS66.WORLDNIC.COM

    New DNS Name Servers:
    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

    ==========================
    FAQ "Domain Mapping" says:

    Q: I own domain.com, can I map that to my wordpress.com blog?
    A: Yes! Here is what you need to do:

    Go to your domain registrar and change the nameservers to the following, being sure to remove any existing nameservers that may be there:
    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com

    If your registrar needs the IP addresses:
    72.232.101.25
    208.69.182.198
    72.233.2.19

    Then you need to wait. DNS propagation could take up to 72 hours - though it is frequently less.

    MyFirstBlog actually is PinkyLotusBlog. That is the one I deleted, was the first mapped and still showing up.
    TheNewBlog actually is PinkyBlog. That is my newly created blog I'm trying to map to my domain PinkyLotusBlog.com.

    in future dont delete you blogs, just the content. that way the blog is still there f you decide you want the name again

    Actually I'm showing PinkyLotusBlog.com to be a working blog here at wp.com.

    PinkyLotusBlog.com is pointing to the deleted blog PinkyLotusBlog? You mean PinkyLotusBlog is not deleted?

    If what're saying is that PinkyLotusBlog still resides in WordPress.com database, I don't know how is that.

    Unfortunatelly I can't post screenshots, otherwise I would post the following:

    a) The screen after I log in where it says "Welcome back, Pinky Lotus. Your blogs: pinkyblog 1,097,647 blogs on WordPress.com. Register another blog", and nothing else.

    b) The screen shown just after I select "My Dashboard". If I pass the mouse over "Pinky Lotus (View site »)" nothing is shown (a drop down menu where it was supposed to present names of all my blogs, in order to select the one I want to work with).

    However, if blog PinkLotusBlog still is in WordPress database and could be accessible, it would be great, because then I could do what tiamatsdisciple told me to do.

    Question: what could be done in order to PinkLotusBlog be accessible (again) to me?

    Do you now have access to the admin section of the blog?

    Hi timethief !

    Did what you told me to. It shows a screen that reads:

    "The authors have deleted this blog. The content is no longer available.
    You can create your own free blog on WordPress.com."

    Ahhh well. Because the first link took me to the blog I hoped the second one (the admin sign-in) might would work for you. But now as you say, the deleted notice is there ... too bad. I can offer no help ... sorry.

    Fixed.
    Check Options > Domains in the new blog.

    For reference, moving a domain is not a problem. I just need the domain name, which blog it is in and which blog it is wanted in.

    Ok, it show both blogs now.

    I wish that URL http://www.PinkyLotusBlog.com points (maps) to blog PinkyLotusBlog.

    Actually PinkyLotusBlog.wordpress.com goes to PinkyLotusBlog.com now.

    Tried to do via support, but it says "Support will be closed today. We will re-open Wednesday morning around 9AM GMT. In the mean time, please feel free to browse the forums and FAQ." Think that was the way, right?

    Anyway think Mark did it (thanks Mark!), pointing URL http://pinkylotusblog.com/ to blog PinkyBlog.
