Deleting Tags

  1. In Dashboard>>Posts>>Tags

I have 750 tags. Many of whom are applied to zero posts.

The problem is, I have many many posts that are are "scheduled" or "drafts", and the tags from these posts are appearing here.

If I delete a tag in the tags page, will it reappear when a post publishes? Or will it automatically be deleted from the scheduled post as well?

As a most general question, does it hurt anything to have all these tags if they are applied to zero posts?

The blog I need help with is smoothreentry.wordpress.com.

  2. I don't schedule posts and I don't care to set up my test blog to test this for your when you can do that easily yourself. :) Please try bulk deleting one Tag as an experiment, and then edit a scheduled post and see if the Tag is still appearing on it.

  3. Okay, testing makes perfect sense. I don't know why I didn't think of it.

The answer is "YES", tags show up as "0" post, even when they are in post scheduled to publish. And deleting the tag on that page does delete it from all posts, be they published, scheduled, or drafts.

    Thanks Timethief!

  4. You're welcome.

P.S. I think every blogger needs a test blog and I have a few of them. ;)

  5. The tags you delete from posts > tags, if they have been assigned to a draft, will be deleted off the draft post as well as I remember it. The tag will not reappear if you publish the draft post the tag was used on. You would have to create the tag again.

Your memory serves you well but we teach how to fish here ... lol :D and smoothreentry is a frequent forum poster so that is what I did.

  7. The bigger question is, is it bad for my itsy bitsy blog to have 750 tags? I'm thinking yes! But I don't know how all the SEO stuff works, but I don't think that can be good to have that many. I am thinking I need to add some consistency to my tagging...

A problem is that I used to put commas between every word as opposed to key phrases. So that is one reason why I have more tags than I should.

  8. Tags are assigned per post and as long as you do not have huge amounts of tags assigned to each post (over 12) then everything would be fine really. 750 does give the search engines a quite a bit to keep track of, but I really don't think it is a problem.
