   INTRO:An hour or so ago Chris made a comment on my blog. It was the first time anyone had ever left a comment. I was humbled and happy. I want to reply to him. I would like the reply to be public but more than that I would like for him to get the reply.

   QUESTION: If I reply in my own blog, to a comment made on my blog, will the original commenter receive the message in his email inbox?

   ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Thank you. My blog's URL is http://magicbody.wordpress.com and the comment is found most easily by referring to the "Recent Comments". I am using one of Andrew's templates. Not knowing how the commenter's email preferences might be set up I will reply IN my blog and send the same to him by email. In the process I will learn more how this all works. I started this blog nearly 5 days ago.

   If they left an email address and if that's a real email address, you could write to them that way. But no, the original commenter will not be automatically emailed. They might return back to see if you did comment or maybe they have bookmarked your site or have signed up to your RSS feed.

   I usually email a copy of the reply to the commenter out of courtesy.

   Just for reference if you see this, please note how I've changed the link to your blog in your post. The 'magicbody' bit takes the place of the 'www' bit within your URL. They can not coexist. 30% of the net and most search engine spiders can't follow such a link. I would suggest not using it.
