Yes. You may want to read this WordPress.com vs WordPress.org We do not provide support for local installs of WordPress here at WordPress.com. That support is found on these forums http://wordpress.org/support/
Thanks, timethief. That comparison is just what I needed. There seem to be no material feature differences, just hosting and support differences.
You're welcome. I have never set up a local install of WordPress but another Volunteer, thesacredpath has experience with them and he may be able to provide more deatil.
Oh no, I'd much rather use wordpress.com. I was just making sure that there would not be customization features that I would somehow be missing compared to the downloaded/self-hosted version.
