disgusting spam comments

  1. Has anyone else had a surge in disgusting pornographic spam comments lately? No way have I, or would I ever, publish such repulsive stuff. In groups of 3, at first it was every few days and yesterday increased to twice a day. There are different (I'm sure fake) email addresses each time.

I can't figure why they keep on since they just get deleted, but wonder if putting a comments policy stating that I pre-moderate, etc. would help.

    Thx

The blog I need help with is catwoodsporchparty.wordpress.com.

  2. I don't read them. I click the empty spam link poof! they are gone. Do not delete spam. Click the empty spam button.

  3. I can't figure why they keep on since they just get deleted, but wonder if putting a comments policy stating that I pre-moderate, etc. would help.

I sincerely doubt it would make one iota of difference to spammers. Many use robotic programs.

There is no such thing as eliminating all spam but Akismet works very well. For more information please take the time to read "5 things every blogger should know about spam" on this page Akismet: How it works http://akismet.com/how/

Spam comes in waves. Also if you approved a single spam comment on a post then the spammers will target your post and hammer it over and over again.

The vast and overwhelming majority of all so-called information on the internet is spam. Over 80% of all so-called comments submitted to .wordpress.com blogs every day are spam.

The worst of all spam containing malware and viruses is not sent to us. It's removed as it could bring down many blogs if opened.

On the spam that Akismet catches it takes only seconds to click "empty spam" and you don't even have to click "empty spam" if you don't want to. Akismet will maintain comments it has caught for 15 days from the time they were received, and then it will delete the comment automatically.

If you get spam that slips by Akismet then mark it as spam (do not delete it) and over time Akismet will learn it's spam.

  4. Thank you! I never approved any spam comment from anywhere, so I wondered if there were other patterns in who was being targeted by this particular spammer.

  5. ! I never approved any spam comment from anywhere ...

How do you know that this person who submitted a comment that you approved here http://catwoodsporchparty.wordpress.com/2012/10/17/announcing-my-cat-book-meowyall-a-feline-centric-memoir/#comment-10 is not a spammer?

All you have to go on is this empty profile page with no gravatar image

  6. I know because that is a personal friend of 40 years with an impeccable reputation. We are somewhat computer novices and this person thought creating a gravitar was necessary to comment, but didn't wish to include personal information. So far, all comments are published are from friends I've known for many years.

  7. (all comments I've published)

  8. I should clarify; for a time period of of about 15 hours, I did publish a comment from someone I didn't know, who had an anonymous IP address. When the next comment from this person had an obvious agenda against another web site, I deleted both - first comment and new pending comment. General spam started long before that, though.

The only comments appearing on the blog now are from people I know well.

I do appreciate your help and advice and will take it to heart! I'll continue being careful about which comments I publish, and I'll always use "Empty spam".

  9. "empty spam" rather than just "delete".

  10. Is it possible to delete this topic? Thanks!

  11. You can go to the top entry of this thread and mark it "resolved" as you created it.

  12. I did move it to resolve, does that delete it? Or is there no option to delete?

  13. Sorry but there is no option to delete.
