   Can this be displayed (category parents and children) on my blog home page, as it is when I post?

   Right now it depends on your theme, but this will be configurable in the future.

   i'm using white as milk.

   could you give me a few examples of themes that do? couldn't i just copy and paste that part of the code into white as milk?

   I haven't tried that with WordPress, but I got that trick to order my gallery (MG2):
   Simply put a comment before the real category name, like
   <!-- 1 --> Category 1
   <!-- 2 --> Category 2
   and so on.

   As those are comments for coding, they won't show up for the user ... unless you make a typo ;)
