I'd like to have a way of displaying update date on my main page aside from editing it manually, which is a pain in the ***.
I'd also like to have the post display its' edit date instead of publish date.
Are those things possible?

No I'm sorry they are not. You will have to make such changes by editing manually as you are currently doing.
So I think I'll make a text widget on main page - faster and easier to edit than the entire main page.
