Is there any way to take advantage of the various gallery options for posts when my photos are elsewhere (smugmug, but I doubt it matters)?
I have no trouble adding images individually (using the link for each) but don't seem to be able to get a gallery going.
I just wanted to (1) rule out the possibility completely or (2) learn what I'm doing wrong if it is possible.

The blog I need help with is synapsecracklepop.com.
If you mean the Gallery as defined in this Support doc http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/ then the images have to be uploaded to your WordPress.com site for it to work because that's what attaches the images to the post or page.
