Do I need another application to help design my site

Im looking to get into the travel business and would like my site to resemble these 2 sites. totemtravel.com and honeymoonislands.com. I was quoted $8,000 for someone to design one for me. I'd prefer to do it myself. I'm a total novice went it comes to CSS and CMS but I am willing to strive to me mysite as professional as possible.

Should I use other programs such as Coda or something else to help me design my site?

    Thank you for your help

The blog I need help with is luxuryadvisors.com.

  2. You cannot build or use your own custom theme built from scratch at WordPress.com.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/

The only themes we can use are those found here > Appearance > Themes
This is a multiuser blogging platform. All blogs wearing the same theme are using the same underlying template and we cannot access the underlying files and edit templates or themes. http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/

There are two free themes, Sandbox and Toolbox designed to allow maximum flexibility for CSS editing and creating new “skins”. Toolbox is more modern and includes a lot of support for CSS3 and HTML5, so it is really only limited by your skills and knowledge.

If you have CSS editing experience the upgrade will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but will not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. It does not allow you to remove footer links to the theme designer or to WordPress.com. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes at WordPress.COM. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/custom-css/

  3. Have you purchased the custom design upgrade?

What should I do if I would like to change the functionality of it?

  6. We cannot change the functionality of free hosted WordPress.com blogs. All blogs wearing the same theme are using the same template on this multiuser blogging platform. We cannot edit themes or templates.

If you wish to have complete control over a blog, the ability to upload themes and plugins, and to edit themes and templates then your option is to hire a web host and get a free software install from WordPress.ORG and self host it.

  7. Also, how good are you with PHP scripting? WordPress themes are built with PHP script with a little HTML here and there, but the bulk of the work is in PHP script. You need a good understanding of PHP otherwise you can open up security holes that the web low-lifes can take advantage of and plunder and burn your site to the ground.

Ok thank you. If I wanted to add some dropdown menus that would open more pages am I still looking to at going over to .org than the customization they offer at .com?

  9. At wordpress.COM, any theme here that has a top navigation can have dropdown menus by creating a custom menu.

  10. I also suggest that unless you are a graphic designer, you aren't going to do the equivalent of an $8000 job starting from scratch. There are some great themes here, so why don't you play around with the free preview of the CSS editing before you decide if you need to buy it or not?
