Domain Mapping

    Hi, quick question on domain mapping.

    I've set up my blog here:
    buildlikenature.wordpress.com

    However to date, I've had my website hosted here
    http://www.buildlikenature.com

    GoDaddy is the host for the domain name, however I now want to point it to my WordPress blog. Do I want to just go in and forward the site to here or am I making any change in name servers? GoDaddy will retain the hosting of the DNS, I just want to point it here.

    I've read this:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

    and this at GoDaddy:
    http://help.godaddy.com/article/664#reghere

    The verbiage isn't clear to me though. A forward seems very easy to do, but I'm not sure if it's really what I want to do since I just want my domain to resolve to the new blog site.

    Any suggestions?

    If you forward, then your blog here will still appear under the original wordpress URL, which is buildlikenature.wordpress.com.

    With domain mapping, your blog here would appear under buildlikenature.com to visitors.

    Are you doing away with your existing website and moving over completely to wordpress.COM?

    Thanks. Yes, I'm doing away with the other site completely and would like to have the URL appear as buildlikenature.com

    Then: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

    Point your domain to the name servers here then do domain mapping.

    OK, maybe it's the verbiage on GoDaddy that's got me.

    These are my options:

    I want to park my domains — This option parks your domain name on our parked servers. When someone opens your domain name from a Web browser, our default parking page displays.
    I want to forward my domains — Use this option if you want to forward this domain name to another URL. See Forwarding or Masking Your Domain Name for more information.
    I have a hosting account with these domains — Use this option when your domain name is hosted with us.
    I have specific nameservers for my domains — This option indicates that you are hosting your domain name with another company (enter the two or more nameservers your hosting provider gave you), or you have custom nameservers you want to use for this domain name.
    ______________________________
    Then I point to:
    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

    Then in WP admin I go to
    Store -> domains -> add domain to blog

    I would do this (actually that is what I did when I moved my site onto WordPress.COM)

    Then I point to:
    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

    Then in WP admin I go to
    Store -> domains -> add domain to blog

    Or what ever it says for Map a domain to your blog and buy domain mapping.

    OK, I did it and everything seems to work fine. Thanks! This shouldn't alter my Mail will it?

    It will break you mail - you need to add some MX records to send mail back to Godaddy or get a gmail I think account that can be mapped to your blog name - Godaddy should have instructions as there have been several people that kept their email with Godaddy after moving their blog to WordPress.COM

    Is the google method the only way to now have an email account associated with this domain?

    OK, I found this article. I realize this isn't a WordPress issue but if we figure this out it should be relevant to folks:

    http://help.godaddy.com/article/5182#domain

    It just calls for me to point the MX records back to GoDaddy

    I looked up the MX records at GoDaddy per the article. This code seems to generally apply for hosted mail from GoDaddy and passed validation in my Domain Custom DNS editor:

    MX 0 smtp.secureserver.net
    MX 10 mailstore1.secureserver.net

    Should I give this a try or am I playing with fire?

    Looks about right - I think you need a full stop (period) at the end of each line -

    You need to do the MX records to get your email to start working again - worst that happens with your lines is you email continues not to work - to trash your site take a different type of record.

    This worked out great. I added the periods at the end of the MX record lines, plugged it in and now the old email is now functioning properly. Thanks,
