If my website is example.wordpress.com and I want to upgrade to example.com and it is telling me that example.com is a domain that is already owned, does that mean that I am the owner of example.com?
The blog I need help with is ellebstyle.wordpress.com.
Did you register "example.com" with another service? (E.g. you might have registered it with GoDaddy, NameCheap, or another registrar.) If you did, then you are the owner of the domain and can map it using this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/
If you did not purchase the domain name elsewhere, then someone else owns that domain name and you need to choose another one. You might want to check if a similar name is available, e.g. example.org or example.net.
