Domain Mapping

  1. Hi there,
Am having a heck of a time trying to map a domain that will be hosted outside of WordPress but using a custom theme. I have the Blog address: http://digital3dproductions.wordpress.com and also have the non wordpress.com version of that domain. Along with the owner of the domain we have uploaded the 3.2.1 software to the third party server, MacHighway, and want to host a custom themed wordpress blog, already have the theme, under the digital3dproductions.com domain.

The DNS records of the domain point to the host server but for some reason when I try mapping the Blog it won't let me. We don't want the blog hosted by WordPress so that we can use the custom theme.

Pulling my hair out as it seems we are just running around in circles. Where are we going wrong?

    Cheers,
    Mark.

The blog I need help with is digital3dproductions.wordpress.com.

  2. Hi Mark. What are you trying to do? Redirect digital3dproductions.wordpress.com to a self-hosted WordPress blog?

  3. That is correct yes.

    Thanks,
    Mark.

  4. Your site here is 5 days old and has no content so

    Redirect digital3dproductions.wordpress.com to a self-hosted WordPress blog?

Does not get you anything - why do you want the "redirect?" Just put config the domain you own. Make friends over at WordPress.ORG for that. http://wordpress.org/support/

  5. I want to install a custom theme that we have. Why should I put content into a theme layout we will not be using?

I was sent from .org to here. Why not have one WordPress support site? Confusing to the max!

  6. My suspicions are that what ever you ask over at .ORG was confusing to them as it has been a bit to us here, so they sent you here as you ask something about WordPress.COM. It looks to me that you grabbed a site here that you did not need to do.

There are two versions of "WordPress" pardon the boilerplate copy and paste below - but it might help a bit.

The site you are asking about does not seem to be hosted on WordPress.COM so you need to make friends over at WordPress.ORG the keepers of the software you are using.

    http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/7-things-to-know-before-posting-in-wordpresscom-forums?replies=1

This site is for support of sites hosted on WordPress.COM. You should address your questions to WordPress.ORG the keepers of the software you are using: http://wordpress.org/support/

For more on the difference: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

  7. Why is this so confusing?????????

1 - I have the domain name that you can see with the wordpress domain
2 - I have a domain that I want to point that wordpress blog to without seeing the wordpress.com extension on the domain. ie Mapping
3 - I will be hosting this all with a third party host
4 - I have a custom theme that I want to customize once the mapping has propagated.

    Where is the confusion?

I didn't ask here because lo and behold wordpress.com doesn't allow the hosting of Custom Themes.

Is my writing really that unclear?

    Regards,
    Mark.

  8. The domain digital3dproductions.wordpress.com can only be used for blogs that are hosted on WordPress.COM - the domain name can not be mapped off site - you can send traffic from digital3dproductions.wordpress.com to another site with Domain Forwarding.

Domain mapping would be used for instance if you wanted to map the domain name digital3dproductions.com to a site here such as (but not restricted to) digital3dproductions.wordpress.com

Domain Mapping can not be used to map the domain name digital3dproductions.wordpress.com to a site and contents not hosted on WordPress.COM.

You should be putting your content on the third party host you mentioned in the first Post - that is why I suggested you get help over at .ORG - your other host has no relation to WordPress.COM.

  9. Hi,
    I want to use a

      custom theme
that has been bought and paid for. How do we do that if wordpress.com doesn't allow this option? Even with forwarding we would still be hosted on wordpress.com but would still not be able to use said custom theme. I have also asked the same questions at wordpress.org and they send me here!!

    This is driving me nuts.

  10. Simple - if you want to use a custom theme you need to install WordPress.ORG software on your own host - then make friends over at WordPress.ORG if you have trouble installing your theme -

you can't use a custom theme on WordPress.COM.

  11. See also: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/

Same Rules Apply – The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes or plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and you will still be required to abide by our Terms of Service.

  12. I give up....this is what I have been saying all along.

    No worries.

If this was what you've been saying all along, you wouldn't be trying what you're trying and you wouldn't be asking what you're asking.

    "Where is the confusion?" Here:

2 - I have a domain that I want to point that wordpress blog to without seeing the wordpress.com extension on the domain. ie Mapping

Mapping means you have a wordpress.com blog, just without "wordpress" in the URL. What you're thinking of is redirecting, not mapping.

And what auxclass has been saying is that you need neither: you need a self-hosted blog plain and simple.

  14. Read my first post. I said exactly that, that I wanted to host EXTERNALLY a wordpress themed Blog. After being sent here by the forum of the .org folks I get the same thing here, go to .org

I do have another site, http;//liquidmocean.com that was set up this way, my own site. This is a wordpress custom theme hosted on a third part server so that I can use a purchased custom theme. I had no problem setting it up before but this time, helping a friend to do it there seems to be a blockage somewhere.

    Cheers,
    Mark.

  15. If you are using Liquidmocean as an example, then what you are talking about is a self-hosted WordPress.ORG installation, using a custom theme, which has no connection at all to anything whatsoever on WordPress.COM. No need for mapping, no need for redirect. Support for these blogs is given by WordPress.ORG support forums.

As everyone above has said, Mapping is only relevant for blogs hosted by WordPress.com and whose owners want to use their own domain name. The blog itself is still hosted by WordPress.com. Support for these blog is given by WordPress.COM forums.

Take a minute and read that ORG vs COM support doc and perhaps it will become clearer. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

  16. Hi there,
To everyone here I apologize profusely for the potential for confusion. I remain at a loss as to what is happening and came to this forum based on a suggestion from people on the wordpress.ORG (yay for caps lock) I understand the difference between the .com and .org options with WordPress for that so thanks. I was also understanding of the reception I was in for here after heeding the advice as mentioned regarding the suggestions of people at the .org forum.

Will attempt to get this sorted without further posting.

    Regards,
    Mark.

  17. Your new site is already coming up under your domain name at digital3dproductions.com . You don't have to do any mapping or any redirect or anything like that over here, and you do not log into that site from here. You now log into that site at

    http://digital3dproductions.com/wp-login.php

You then go to appearance > themes and you can either search the wordpress.ORG themes section for the theme you want and do a one-click install, or you can download the theme you want to use to your computer and then at appearance > themes use the "upload" link at top left and you will then be able to locate the zip package on your computer and upload and install the theme.

Once you go self-hosted, you no long have any connection whatsoever with wordpress.COM. Your site is completely stand-alone.

  18. thanks for that, I am at the dashboard for the blog but hahaha, no option to upload the custom theme. Seems this is not propagated yet.

The last time indeed that I get involved with WordPress methinks.

    Thanks,
    Mark.

  19. Click on appearances in the left module in the dashboard. Look up at the top and you will see two tabs, manage themes and upload themes. Click on the "upload themes" tab. At the upper left on that page will be a text link called "upload". Click that link and follow the directions.

  20. Thanks for all your help, I am aware of the Theme appearance tabs and this one doesn't have any! If I could upload an image to show you here I have a selection grab of that part of the screen/interface and nothing there...

    Soooooo frustrating..

    Cheers,
    Mark.

  21. That is it doesn't have the tabs that allow the uploading of custom themes...

Read my first post. I said exactly that, that I wanted to host EXTERNALLY a wordpress themed Blog.

I didn't object to that, I objected to your claim that you've also being saying what the Support doc on domain mapping says.

    A. You need a wp.org blog (as you said).
    B. Domain mapping doesn't mean redirecting, it means custom address, and it's for wp.com blogs (as the doc says - and as auxclass told you).

B explains why you were sent here. But A+B should have shown that domain mapping is of no use to you.

If I could upload an image to show you

You can link to an image uploaded elsewhere. But you need to do it at the wp.org forum: here we provide support for wp.com blogs, not self-hosted blogs.
