I would like to delete my domain but the cancel function is not there. I am not understanding the 60 days or longer, does this mean I can't cancel my domain until 60 days after I purchased it?
I would like to use my domain name for a WordPress.org site that I'll eventually run but I really need this domain name.

Hi, you don't need to cancel your domain if you want to use it elsewhere. (Note that if you cancel a domain, there is no guarantee that you'll be able to register it's elsewhere).
Instead, you can point the domain you registered at WordPress.com to another server (hosting service) with these steps:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/change-name-servers/
You'll need to obtain the name server values from your current host. You should be able to find them on their support documentation, or contact them and ask for the information. (Name servers may be referred as "nameservers" or "NS records" instead.)
