domain transfer isn't listed in domain management area

  • I am wanting to transfer my domain – http://www.gandgmusicshop.com to hostgator but when I go to the domain management area there is no option to transfer it. I can only edit and edit the DNS. Can someone please walk me through what i am missing here?

I have already read everything about transferring domains on the forums etc and am having no luck. I”m not sure if it’s an issue from webs.com where the domain is sitting now (I changed the name servers over to the wordpress ones for now) or if it’s something I didn’t do when I purchased the mapping via wordpress over 2 months ago now.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hey there, Chelsey,

I don’t see any custom domains affiliated with your WordPress.com account. You had gandgmusicshop.com mapped to your WordPress.com site, but we weren’t your registrar for the domain.

It appears that gandgmusicshop.com is registered with enom.com. Here is the public information for your domain:

    http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/results.jsp?domain=gandgmusicshop.com

It is with your domain registrar that you’ll initiate a transfer.

I hope this helps! If you have any other concerns, drop me a note. Thanks much!

  • Oy…. I didn’t even know it was registered with lemon.

I have a bit of a complicated problem that hopefully you can help with.

I signed up for wordpress not thinking that I already had an account with them from years ago. When I mapped the domain, I used the same e-mail that I would have had years ago when the other account was being used (this is the old one). My new account is under a different e-mail address: (email visible only to moderators and staff). I created a new website in this new account but realized just recently the domain was mapped to my old one… so today I cancelled the domain on the old account and re-mapped it to the new one.. hoping that would help brings things under one roof. So now that I know ti’s registered with Emon.com, I should be able to login through emon and initiate the transfer from there to the wordpress account for the e-mail address above. Will this be what makes it official with the transfer over to wordpress?

    Thanks so much

  • Hey there!

Thanks for the additional information. I do see both the WordPress.com user accounts you’ve mentioned.

Could you please tell me which WordPress.com user account you want to use, and what WordPress.com site name you want to map?

I originally assumed that you wanted to use the username, objectsarecloserthantheyappear. There are three WordPress.com sites connected to the account:
    gandgmusicshop
gandgmusicshopdotcom (this is the only one that appears to have any content)
    gandgmusicshopdotcom1

Currently, I see the domain (gandgmusicshop.com) mapped to Hostgator’s servers. If you want to detach that so you can use it with your WordPress.com site instead, let me know. I can begin that process. Otherwise, we can leave it as-is.

So now that I know ti’s registered with Emon.com, I should be able to login through emon and initiate the transfer from there to the wordpress account for the e-mail address above. Will this be what makes it official with the transfer over to wordpress?

While we register new domains here at WordPress.com, we’re not able to accept incoming transfers of existing domain names. Therefore, we recommend that you keep the name registered at your current registrar (enom.com). You can use the domain for your site here at WordPress.com by mapping the domain, as explained here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Let me know how you’d like to proceed. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

  • Hey there !

I”d like to use the account whose username is “chelsey” and e-mail linked to it is glenngotell@….. the website I’d like to map is http://www.gandgmusicshop.com and within that wordpress account you’ll see a site that is fairly developed for the most part. I don’t want to use this account at all!

I’ll map gandgmusicshop.com to whatever is easiest to use. I figured that since hostgator is my host, it might be easier to have the domain registered with them but I can’t get the login information from the guy who created the emon account to be able to get in there to start the transfer of the site to hostgator.. and then use their name servers in wordpress where it’s built. I’d like to remove it from emon all together as I’ve never worked in that site.

I’m pretty new to this stuff and know i got myself into a bit of a messed up situation so am open to however you think would be best to proceed in the “chelsey” account with the website I’ve built in there, to the website address I mentioned above and with hostgator as a host! ha!

Thank you so much for your help!

  • Hey Chelsey,

All right, let’s break down the issues. First, your domain hosting:

While we register new domains here at WordPress.com, we’re not able to accept incoming transfers of existing domain names. Therefore, we recommend that you keep the name registered at your current registrar. You can use the domain for your site here at WordPress.com by mapping the domain, as explained here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

You will definitely need access to your domain in order to map it to your WordPress.com site.

You can also register a brand new domain with us here at WordPress.com, if it would suit you.

If you would like to use the user name “chelsey,” you can move the WordPress.com site, gandgmusicshopdotcom.wordpress.com, to that account.

    Here’s how:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-wordpress-com-user-or-account

Once that is done, you can log into your “chelsey” account to manage your blog, and add domain mapping to it.

    So, your first steps are:

    1. Decide how to handle your domain management. Can you keep it where it is and map it to WordPress.com, or will you register a new domain name here?
    2. Move your site’s ownership to the “chelsey” account.

After you complete those steps, we can move forward!

Drop me a line when you’re done, and I can help further. Thanks so much!

  • OK great. I’m just waiting for the login information for lemon.com.

I don’t need to move the blog to the “chelsey” account. There is already a site that I built in that account that I’d like to use. This account that I”m in now has nothing in it of any value.

So once I have the account information for the emon domain, would I simply add the hostgator name servers that they gave me and add them within the emon.com site so it points to there (where it’s hosted) but then map the domain from wordpress to link all three of them together? If I”m wrong, please let me know. Not positive I’m getting everything and really want to.

    Thanks again!

  • HIya!

So once I have the account information for the emon domain, would I simply add the hostgator name servers that they gave me and add them within the emon.com site so it points to there (where it’s hosted) but then map the domain from wordpress to link all three of them together?

    1. Once you can log into your domain host (enom.com), you will change your name servers there. The name servers will “point” to your site on Hostgator.
    2. At Hostgator, you will make certain that your site has domain mapping setup so your servers “accept” the connection between your domain and your website.
    3. Once that’s done, you don’t need WordPress.com at all. Because your domain is registered outside of WordPress.com, and your site is hosted on non-WordPress.com servers, you don’t need any configuration done here.
    4. What I would recommend, however, is that once all the mapping is complete, you can delete the domain mapping here at WordPress.com, so it doesn’t interfere at all. This will need to be done with your “chelsey” account, as this is the account you used to sign up for domain mapping of gandgmusicshop.com.

I can help with this, if you would like, but you’ll need to make the request from that account. This is a security issue, and the administrative email address for that user account will be proof of ownership of that mapping upgrade.

Do you feel as if that gives you the next steps you can work on? Let me know! Thank you :)

  • Hi there –

So I looked into this further with the guy who built the old website and he assured me that he has never registered the domain with enom. He said he did everything through webs.com and that is where the site is registered… So I am not sure why it’s saying its registered with enom.

With that said, I do have an EPP transfer code from webs.com.

Will I not need the WordPress account even though I built the website in WordPress and that’s where it sits? You can view it in my “chelsey” account…

I’ll touch base with host gator with the EPP code that I recieved and initiate the transfer from webs and come back here if I need more help. Thanks again!

  • Hey Chelsey,

Many companies use outside domain registrars as their domain hosts. This isn’t unusual, and might account for the fact that your domain is listed as being registered at enom. Not a biggie, as you’ve gotten your transfer code from webs.com. That’s the important thing!

Will I not need the WordPress account even though I built the website in WordPress and that’s where it sits? You can view it in my “chelsey” account…

This is entirely up to you. I always think it’s better to keep the site. I’ve seen many cases of users who regret deleting a site, even after moving elsewhere. Site deletion at WordPress.com is permanent and cannot be reversed for any reason. You can hide it from the public, and you can allow it to lay dormant. However, whenever (if ever) you need the old content, you always have access to it here at WordPress.com. Think of it as a backup of your old site.

Of course, you are more than welcome to delete it, if you’d rather!

If you want to permanently delete your site, follow the guide below:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/delete-site/

Please read the warnings and advice before deleting a site, as we can’t revert a site deletion for any reason and the site address cannot be reused.

If you want to hide your site instead, you can use the following guide to make your site private so only you and people that you have invited can view the site:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

Best of luck with the transfer of the domain, and the new site! Wishing you the best :)

  • Great.

I am now waiting for the transfer of the domain to take place to hostgator from webs.com. Hostgator has asked that I come to wordpress support and ask for you to send me the IP so they can update it on their end to get the website up and running. Can you please provide me with this? Or where do I go to find it?

    Thanks again for everything!

  • Hello Chelsey!

Hostgator has asked that I come to wordpress support and ask for you to send me the IP so they can update it on their end to get the website up and running. Can you please provide me with this? Or where do I go to find it?

I’m a bit confused. Could you explain why they would need an IP address? If you’re no longer using your WordPress.com site, they shouldn’t need to connect to it.

If what you need to do is move your content from WordPress.com to your self-hosted site, that should be done by export/import.

You can export the content from your WordPress.com site by following the instructions here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/

Then you’ll be able to import the XML file into your self-hosted site.

Please let me know the purpose for the IP request, and I can help further. Right now, the issue sounds as if it’s been a bit muddled.

    Thanks so very much!

  • HI there –

I am not moving the wordpress site at all. I am leaving it in wordpress and then pointing the domain to hostgator where it will be registered (in about 5 days – just waiting for the transfer to finalize).

He said this exactly: …At hostgator, we would point the domains A record to wordpress.com. So all we need is the A record ip from wordpress and we will have it working for you.

  • Chelsey,

Sorry, with all the discussion, I got confused between enom, hostgator…and where your site was going! All right, so if you are hosting your domain at Hostgator, and hosting your website at WordPress.com, the best way to map a domain to a WordPress.com blog is to set your domain’s name servers to the following values:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

However, if your registrar requires that you create A records, please note that our IPs change over time. Because of this, your domain might stop working at some point in the future. If that happens, please get in touch with us to find out the most current IPs and then update your A records accordingly.

If you still want to map your domain using A records, please be sure to create two records using these IP addresses:
    192.0.78.12
    192.0.78.13

Let me know if you have other questions. Thank you.

  • HI there –

So things have been progressing very slowing with HostGator. They are going to be transferring my website content from the “chelsey” account over to hostgator. This is the recent response I got from them and was hoping you could help me get things setup so they can get in and access what they need to be able to export it. Let me know if you’re able to update this stuff for me so that they can go in and export as needed.. or if i have to do it… how. :) Thank you so much!

    From HostGator:
We’ve run into a few problems with attempting to perform the requested migration.

First, we’re unable to log into your WordPress.com dashboard to access the export function. The username and password do work at WordPress.com, but the site URL appears to have been updated to point to your HostGator account’s temporary URL. We do not recommend using the Temporary URL.

Second, the DNS does not appear to have been set correctly for gandgmusicshop.com to point to your HostGator account. The error message you see when accessing http://gandgmusicshop.com in a browser hints at this. The nameservers are currently set to:
    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

To point to your HostGator Hatchling account, they would need to be pointed to:
    ns8349.hostgator.com
    ns8350.hostgator.com

I would recommend against doing this for now, however, until we have your WordPress site migrated and set up.

Please check to see if WordPress.com can assist you with changing your siteURL back to what it should be. Once we can access your source Dashboard, we can work on the export / import process.

  • Hey Chelsey!

You must be exhausted by this move :)

First, we’re unable to log into your WordPress.com dashboard to access the export function. The username and password do work at WordPress.com, but the site URL appears to have been updated to point to your HostGator account’s temporary URL. We do not recommend using the Temporary URL.

Hostgator cannot have direct access to WordPress.com’s servers. So, they can’t “migrate” the contents of your site. If you want to move over all your content, you’ll want to do an export. This is something you can do on your own, and it’s VERY simple.

    Here are the instructions:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/

Then, if Hostgator has set up WordPress on their servers, in order to host your site, you can go to Tools → Import in your Dashboard. Then, you’ll upload the XML file (that you exported from WordPress.com) into your self-hosted site.

Your domain isn’t housed here at WordPress.com, so all of those changes will not take place here. They will happen with your domain registrar. For what it’s worth, I agree with Hostgator, that you shouldn’t remap your site to them until your site is built.

Please check to see if WordPress.com can assist you with changing your siteURL back to what it should be. Once we can access your source Dashboard, we can work on the export / import process.

Just a review, you should do your own export from WordPress.com. You shouldn’t give Hostgator your user name and password here. It can become a security issue for you to give this information away.

If you have questions about your export, let me know! Thanks :)

  • Hey again!

I can’t even get into the “tools” tab to move the content on my own. I can’t click on anything on the left side. It takes me to a hostgator error page. Any suggestions on how to move past this so I can at least start that process?

Thanks again for everything. Once I can get the export underway I think I’ll be good to go. (hopefully).

    Chelsey

  • Chelsea,

To do the export, you should be at WordPress.com, not Hostgator. Remember, you’re grabbing your content from WordPress.com, and placing on in Hostgator’s servers.

At least…I think that’s what you’re doing? Correct me, if I’m wrong.

I’m not sure which of your three sites is the “old” blog, from which you want to do the export. If you tell me which it is, I can give you a direct link to the export page.

    gandgmusicshop
    gandgmusicshopdotcom
    gandgmusicshopdotcom1

    Thanks!

  • I am wanting to transfer the site that is in the “chelsey” account.. not this one. This one is an old account that I forgot I had and then went and created another one under another e-mail and created the website in it.

  • I am wanting to transfer the site that is in the “chelsey” account.. not this one.

Ok, since that is a self-hosted site, I’m not able to be very helpful in regards to the export. I cannot access your files. Since you are getting a Hostgator error page, you’ll need to ask them for assistance.

At this point, unless I’m mistaken, your domain has been moved from WordPress.com, and you are transferring a non-Wordpress.com site to another non-WordPress.com server.

If this is the case, I have no more access to your account or files. The only help I can give is with WordPress.com sites. If you need help on that front, I can do it. Just let me know.

    Thanks!
