don't delete blogs! transfer

  1. People please stop deleting accounts you no longer want, particularly if the name of the account is great and could be used by someone else! Lets save them!

Stick your unwanted account on http://blogswapper.wordpress.com and connect with someone that would like it and transfer it!

Alternatively, if you find an account that isn't being used... drop them a message saying to offer it up to http://blogswapper.wordpress.com and find a new owner for it.

It sucks that good names die... lets try and save a few! :)

  2. Just my two cents, but it's a bit unfair to demand that people "not using" their account should transfer their names. I don't use my blog here anymore, but it's mine and whether I post in it anymore or merely use it as a backup archive of my blog before I moved it to a new domain doesn't mean I can't still have it here. That was one of the perks of signing up early - first come, first serve. Plus, how do YOU know they aren't using their account. Just because you can't see their posts doesn't mean they aren't private or something.

I understand that deleting an account doesn't free it back up for other people to use - and I agree with transferring in that case. But still, that's the person's decision. They should feel they HAVE to transfer their account. I certainly wouldn't want people linking to my old URLs - it's confusing enough as it is.

  3. They should feel they HAVE to transfer their account.

That should say: "They shouldn't feel they HAVE to transfer their account." I can't type today.

  4. Transferring blogs around does have examples. I picked up trent.wordpress.com and wasn't using it, so I gave it to another "trent" out there. He wasn't using it, so I asked him to transfer it back and he did! 2 transfers......1 blog. It does happen. Rules are rules and we just do what we can within them ;)

  5. It could certainly be a voluntary thing to list their blogs there instead of deleting them. I think it could be a good idea.

  6. re: ceo ... there's no 'should' or 'demand' in my idea and there is no 'unfair' in my suggestion (ok, the tone of my title could lead to that assumption, but it was more one of ethusiasm)... i just had a thought that shoving 'unwanted' accounts in a place whereby people who want them could request a transfer is better than deleting them entirely.

btw - to any WP officials that are reading.. i didn't actually want the name 'blogswapper' but as my 2 other choices were already taken, I mistakenly got into the habit of entering names into the signup form and seeing if they were taken already ... and by the time blogswapper was entered and submitted... it was mine! eeek... It would be nice to have a checker to find out if a name is available before commiting myself. I know there's ways around it.. but I can see how people end up with blog accounts they don't want, just by trying to see whats not been chose.

  7. I often advise people that instead of deleting blogs thay can simply remove entries and leave a post saying the blog will be passed on. But it's only a suggestion and I do not follow up on it.

I wasn't implying that was what you meant, but the tone of the post I read on the link provided certainly came across as such; thus my reply. Clearly everyone is entitled to do as they please with their blog and I think the idea of transferring is pretty spiffy all things considered.

Mark's suggestion is the norm from my own experience, though. Not deletion. :)

  9. I wish people would transfer. It would actually give us a chance to have the cool names that may be taken

  10. I think Automattic should find a solution to this. Because I think it is unstrustable to never delete the data user leave behind. If we choose to delete a blog, or want our account deleted, it should be done easily. And blog names is useable once again!

    Just my two cents...

    Birger :)
