I am wondering if wordpress is correct for me. I'm trying to create a web page to where people can come to my page to purchase items by clicking an image and then checking out into a checkout cart using their credit card info

E-commerce isn't possible here at WordPress.com.
If you require e-commerce/shopping cart functionality, you might be interested in a self-hosted (WordPress.org) installation. There are no restrictions on e-commerce if you set up a self-hosted WordPress.org blog instead of a WordPress.com blog, but there are some added responsibilities.
