I'm a new user. I realize from what I've read that I can't edit the HTML for a template. Can I edit the HTML on a specific post? I imported my posts from blogger in which I had basic HTML like horizontal rules <HR> and minor tags within lists, like <ol start="3"> and I can't get them to take. Is what I'm trying to do possible?

You can edit any post and once it's in the visual rich text editor you can switch to "code" and make the adjustments required. This is a display and explanation of the icons in the editor http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/15/what-do-all-the-icons-mean/
The allowed html tags are listed here http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/06/08/allowed-html-tags/
And in the codex at this link I will give you scroll down to find "Quicktags"

I'm making my HTML edits within the code tab. The allowed tags link above is helpful. I see that it allows ol tags, but when I try to do something a little more sophisticated <ol start="3">, it just keeps stripping out everything but ol. Is the additional code within the ol tag not allowed? (By the way, I was also trying to add a horizontal rule <hr>, which is an allowed tag. It wasn't showing up in my post, but then this morning I changed themes and it did show up.)

This and nothing more sophisticated is what we have:

DANG! The code got stripped. To make a long story short, what we can use is listed in the Quicktags. Any other code will be stripped out.

Thanks for explaining. I appreciate your time.
