Edit-Post page not working properly

  1. I never had any problems before, but today I encountered all kinds of very strange problems when trying to edit a new post. It seems like the "Edit new post" page does not work properly anymore, and the content of the edit box is not properly updated and handled.
When clicking the Preview button, this produces not an updated preview but the just re-shows the old one. I can get an updated preview only by first saving the edit box contents as a draft.
The insert media buttons in most cases do not work at all. Once in a while (every fifty clicks or so) it manages to open the insert-image form. Uploading or selecting an image then appears to work (I checked this in my media library). But when I next click the Insert button, I get a completely blank window instead of an updated Edit box. I can go back to the Edit page but the contents are not updated (no image is inserted). So what this boils down to is, I cannot insert any images.
There are many other problems on the same Edit page, for example the down arrow beside my name in the top right corner does not work anymore (so no log-out-option). It all looks like some kind of script problem, but I'm not aware of having changed anything since my previous post... I've checked all this both in Opera 11 and IE 9, got the same problems in both, so the problem is not browser-related.
As this makes it very difficult for me to update my blog, I would really very much appreciate any help or suggestions!

The blog I need help with is stayontop.wordpress.com.

  2. I'm sorry but you failed to post an active link starting with http:// to the blog in question. Will you please do that now?

  3. Sorry! (and thanks so much for your willingness to take a look at my problem)
    The URL is http://stayontop.wordpress.com/
But as the last successful post was a month ago, I do wonder, could content that old give some kind of clue about the problems I ran into today?

  4. UPDATE:
Because I thought that maybe the scripts that drive the Edit Post page could be incompatible with my Win7x64 desktop PC, I tried the very same actions (inserting images from the media list, getting previews, etc) on my Win7x32 laptop. But here I encountered the very same problems - a totally blank page when trying to insert something, most of the buttons not working, preview not updating, etc.
Having the same problems with Edit Post on two different computers, indicates that the problem is not at my end, but somewhere at the WordPress end. So now I am curious: is no one else having these problems with Edit Post? If I am the only one, then I must confess I just cannot understand what I'm doing wrong, because when publishing my previous 40 posts I never had such problems.
I also must say I am getting a little frustrated because after many hours of trying, I still have not been able to publish the illustrated post I had in mind... I will be very grateful for any kind of help with solving this mysterious problem!

  5. I'm flagging this thread for Staff support.

  6. Here are some troubleshooting techniques you can try while waiting:
Are you using http:// or https:// see http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

Which browser and version of it are you using? Have you tried clearing your browser cache and cookies? http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050

Is your browser version up to date? You can upgrade any browser version here.
    http://browsehappy.com/

Do you have third party cookies enabled?

    Do you have JavaScript enabled?

Do you have another browser you can try?

You can use this link to see if your Flash is up to date. http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ If it’s not up to date then this is where to download and install the latest version of Flash. http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/

Have you had any recent operating system or security upgrades?
Sometimes operating system and/or security system updates can cause problems so check for known issues. When you make adjustments to your browser settings — changing privacy settings, deleting cookies or increasing security — you will need to close your window and restart the browser before those new settings become effective.

  7. Thank you! To answer your questions/suggestions:
    - I am using simple http, not https.
    - I frequently (almost daily) use CCleaner to clean cache and cookies of both my browsers. Will do so again in a minute and retry.
    - Browsers: Opera 11.51 and Internet Explorer version 9.0.8112, both recently updated, both never showed these editor problems before.
    - Third party cookies allowed, as far as I know. Right now my Opera cookies window shows 14 wordpress.COM cookies and 3 wordpress.ORG cookies, plus 2 for my blog itself.
    - Javascript is enabled.
    - Trying a third browser: I still have a K-meleon on my laptop, will try Edit Post with that one tonight.
    - Flash: last version 11.0.1.152 was installed for both Opera and IE
    - Recent upgrades: yes, the Win7x64 on my desktop was installed (clean install, no upgrade) a month ago, but the Win7x32 on my laptop is at least a year old - it always worked fine with WordPress in the same config that now shows these problems.
I hope all this can help eliminate a few possible causes? I will go on checking whatever comes to mind, and if I happen to find the cause myself will of course report it here. In the meantime I am very happy with the help I'm getting here.

  8. UPDATE: Problem still persists, whatever I tried, and I tried a lot. Upload/insert buttons and several other elements on the Edit-Post page still won't work at all, regardless what browser or computer I use. In effect, this makes it impossible for me to publish anything, except a plain-text-only post.

Am I really the only one having this problem? I'm banging my head to find out what might be causing this... One possible clue that came to mind: logging in to my WordPress account, that used to take just a second, now takes longer than what I was used to: more like five seconds. Can it be that somehow my user account got corrupted?

I feel like pulling out my hairs over this! Help!

  9. SOLVED!
By trial and error I found out that the actual cause was hidden in the Windows Hosts file, which was identical on both my computers. I use the Hosts file to block popup pushers, porn sites, malware spreaders, phishing sites - all kinds of dubious and unwanted stuff. I have a program called HostsMan that regularly updates the list with new "bad sites" flagged by known "listers". All connections with a site are impossible once it's listed in the Host file.

After I disabled the Hosts file, the WordPress Edit-Post page worked normally again. Apparently, one of the PHP scripts called by WordPress was supposed to open some other site that had been blocked by the Hosts file. BTW, while trying to sort out the connections and the traffic I found a nice invitation from WordPress builder Automattic.com among the headers: if I was hacker enough to read this, I should apply for a job with them... Well, at least that made me feel a little better.

To cut a long story short, I gave up pinpointing the exact culprit and simply replaced my Host file by an older version. Problem solved, at least for now.

Many thanks for the help and support!

I'm so happy to hear you resolved this. Thanks for sharing your news and for the persistence you demonstrated when seeking the cause and dealing with it. Best wishes for happy blogging! :)

  11. Hi Guys,

I am having the same problems with a mac re uploading images (see link below) and was wondering if you might have any ideas towards the cause. Have done all the above as per instruction and really feel under pressure to update my blog.
