Editing comments

  1. Is it possible that WordPress will roll out the ability to edit comments any time soon?

The blog I need help with is linusfernandes.com.

  2. Hi there!

Is this regarding editing comments you've left on other sites?

  3. Hello Shawna,

I am curious about this as well (depending on if Fernal73 is referring to what I think/assume ;) ) and I think that it would be nice to be able to edit your own comments at the WordPress.com Forums and your own comments made on other peoples' blogs/et cetera, you can do this with your own reblog comments and your own comments made on your own blog, and so it would be nice to be able to do this with your own comments in/on other areas.

    Thank you,
    -John Jr

  4. Unsurprisingly I have blogged on this here http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/11/15/your-comments-who-owns-them/

Maybe I would be inclined say "yes" to a 5 minute window of opportunity to edit a comment to correct spelling and/or grammar errors that has been submitted to another person's blog, provided the original substance in the comment is not altered and provided the approved comment has not received a response.

If that time limit and that provision were not in place then I would be inclined to close comments on my blogs. Why? Because I have seen the hellish consequences of allowing editing of the substance in comments without time limits, and/or allowing comments to be edited and/or deleted after they have been responded to, on another blogging platform. The result was chaos and ill will.

Bottom line: I support all of us taking full responsibility for all of our online communication. I support all of us meaning what we say in comments and not submitting anything in any comment that we would want to retract later.

I think that it would be nice to be able to edit your own comments at the WordPress.com Forums

We had that ability long ago on these support forums and it was abused. I hope we never ever have that ability here again.

  6. Thanks for the clarification from your end JohnJr! As far as I know there are no plans to add this capability.

Timethief's hesitations about comment editing is, I think, what mainly keeps sites and forums from offering this as an option. I'll make sure the request is in our system though. :)

  7. @shawnajroberts
When you make the request, I respectfully ask that you also include my concerns. I am deeply concerned about the potential for abusive behavior that such a comment editing/removal ability would open the door to, not only in regard to comment editing/removal from blogs, but also here in the support forums from forum threads.

  8. @Timethief

Thank you for sharing that link to your blog post and for sharing your opinions on this.

I was not around back then and I have not experienced/seen what you experienced/seen so thank you for reminding us of the potential abuses that could take place.

I might not completely agree with you in how to handle this overall (there are other services that offer this option and the world has not ended, abuses do happen at times of course, but I do not think that things will get too bad when there are proper safeguards and punishments in place), but I do appreciate you sharing your opinions and I hope that they are considered as well.

    @Shawna

You are welcome, and thank you. :)

Makes sense to me - most of us have goofed spelling or something -

I have seen the edit feature abused in other forums

I left a comment on a Powered by WordPress site - had some numbers wrong (left out "000" so the order of magnitude was way wrong - emailed the editor (have their email) - they fixed that and the other bigger goof I missed where I had "pubic education" and not "public education" - a way big goof - my limited experience with high quality blogs is the editor will fix things if you ask

  10. @auxclass
Just saying ... I saw chaos in Blogger blogs when people began editing and deleting comments after they had been responded to. There's no way I support any feature that allows anyone to think they have "the right to be forgotten". I support the right to be able to witness the past behavior of those we are dealing with online.

P.S. If I make spelling or grammar errors in comments I post a second comment and ask the blogger to correct them. Thus far I have never been refused.

I run a high traffic blog (usually in the top 10 of wordpress.com) with hundreds to sometimes thousands of comments per day.

The most commonly requested feature is the ability for users to edit their comments to correct spelling and other mistakes.

I tried Enterprise briefly, and it's lame-o comment editing plugin, but decided it was not worth the cost.

Blogger has the ability for comment editing, when will wordpress.com get parity with your competitor?

The blog I need help with is wattsupwiththat.com.

Regarding time thief's comments, when you have hundreds of users, requests for fixing mistakes adds up pretty quick.

A short window of editing opportunity, say no more than 10 minutes solves the chaos issue while at the same time unburdens the site owner from having to fix hundreds to thousands of comment mistakes per year.

Disqus has comment editing, and it seems to do just fine.

  13. Hello Wattsupwiththat,

Thank you for sharing that. :)

  14. If we're already asking, I'd rather have a "Preview and edit your comment" before posting, both on sites and in the forums, rather than a 5-minute or 10-minute (WAY too long in my opinion) editing window after posting.

There are threads where comments are being posted much faster than at 5- or 10-minute intervals and in the past this was abused, at least in the forums.

    My 2¢ worth.

  15. Hello Justjennifer,

That preview and edit idea sounds like a good idea that should be available now and it could also be available even if comment editing is allowed, and so thank you for sharing that; and I think that After The Deadline spell/grammar check should be available as well. :)

I still do not agree about the 10 minute limit, to me that is too short (for so many reasons), but I would accept 1 day (24 hours) as a compromise. ;)

Preview and edit sounds fine by me. Then if they make a mistake there's no justification for asking site owner/mod to do it.

But really @shawnajroberts, we need SOMETHING to give users a chance to fix their comments before or after posting.

The burden on highly commented site owners/mods is high.

  17. @johnjr-I guess you've never participated in a comment "flame war" where people were abusing the edit function to the point where they claimed they never said what they said, even if someone quoted them 2 minutes later (which of course they could not edit themselves and were caught red-handed).

If you don't review your comment prior to posting, it's your fault. :) But a 5-minute, 10-minute or 1 whole day editing window? I shudder to think of it.

  18. Hello Justjennifer,

Probably not, but I still do not think that it justifies removing comment editing especially if proper safeguards are put in place. ;)

Many people do partial reviewing of their comments, and sometimes they miss things; and it is their fault yes but we all make mistakes, and I still do not think that it would be that big of a problem with the proper safeguards in place but that is just my opinion. ;)

Thank you for responding by the way. :)

  19. Comment revision? No, please!

At least here on these public forums everyone needs to remember that posts are indexed by Google, and other search engines, within a minute (or only a few). Less than 5 minutes.

    So:
You say "there" instead of "their," or "your" instead of "there" or "you're," or use a grocer's apostrophe (apple's $1/pound), or type 100 instead of 1000… Well, write another comment to make what you mean clear. We all make mistakes! And most folks can figure out what you meant!

I remember from when I first came to wp.com the consequences of justjennifer's comment, and it was the "flame wars" which made these forums difficult to follow, use, learn from, and use.

If a user wants to apply the option of editing comments to their own site, well, my advice to the WordPress.com folk is to make sure that is only an "opt in" feature. IMNSHO it is asking for trouble.

I like that idea. Thanks for posting it here.
