Editing my Vigilance Themed Blog

  • Hello,

I just started using wordpress for my blog and selected the new vigilance as my theme. I tried to go to the CSS editor and it just gives me the welcome text. I then read over the original style sheet and it gave me a link to help with editing. After following the link (http://themes.jestro.com/vigilance/easy-upgrading-wordpress-child-themes/#comments) I followed the instructions:

    1. Download vigilance child theme….Done.
    2. Unzip and Unload… How? Here is the instructions that the site gave me:

Unzip and upload this theme into your wp-content/themes directory just as you would any other theme.
Note: The theme must be in it’s own directory, just like any other theme, e.g. themes/myvigilance

Could someone please help me with this step.

    Thank you!

  • You cannot upload themes (or child themes) here at wordpress.COM.

What you will have to do, is get the paid CSS upgrade (if you do not already have it) and then make changes to the original CSS for Vigilance.

My suggestion is to put ONLY your changes into the CSS edit box, and then make sure that “add to existing stylesheet… ” is selected. That way your additions will override the same sections of the original CSS. By doing this, you are in effect, creating a child theme.

  • @tsp
Currently there is no existing stylesheet for Vigilance. For whatever reason, the WordPress staff decided not to include it with the theme, although the theme was made public weeks ago. Besides a few meager default options there’s not much you can do, even with the CSS Upgrade, unless you can get hold of the original CSS theme somewhere else and then apply the changes as you would normally do.

  • Hmmm, interesting.

I guess then the OP could take the “child theme” CSS file, copy out the contents, and then paste it into the CSS edit box, select “add to existing… ” and save it and see what happens.

I wonder why the CSS is not available?

  • Actually I just downloaded vigilance, and the child theme, and things are done a little differently with this theme. In the vigilance theme, you have to get the “master.css” file out of the CSS folder. That is where the bulk of the CSS is located.

I don’t have the CSS upgrade, so I can’t even try out making changes (based on the master.css file) to the CSS to see if it would even work.

  • @tsp Thanks for your help. I’m a bit of a novice so I am left a bit confused after reading this thread. I do have the CSS upgrade but as @wpvstp stated there is no existing stylesheet for vigilance. I downloaded the vigilance and the child theme… looked in the myvigilance theme folder and didn’t find the “master.css” file. All I see are the “functions.php, Screenshot.png, and style.css” files. Am I missing something? If I did have the master.css file then what do I do with it?

Thanks for any help you can provide. I appreciate it.

  • Master.css is in the CSS folder within the main vigilance theme folder.
