Email notification on reply to comment

  1. Hi there, is there way for people to get notification of replies to their comments via email? I have been to other blog sites and I find that to be a very helpful feature for keeping a conversation going.

  2. No, I'm afraid that isn't possible on wordpress.com.

  3. Is that being discussed as a possibility for their platform? I think it helps keep discussions going especially for people that do not visit everyday...

  4. I think this would be a great feature to add (the most important from my pov). I wonder if it is impossible or hugely expensive for wordpress MU to offer it but it is the one thing that is pushing me to host the blog myself.

  5. I don't know if it is being discussed or not, but my feeling is that it would be quite a bit of work on the back end. If you had 50 unique commenters on a popular post, each time someone made a comment, it would have to send notification to 50 individuals. I've seen some very popular blogs that get hundreds of comments on a post in a day, and on one, up to 5 to 6 hundred (dilbertblog).

  6. Even if you had 50 unique commenters, you could make the email notifications an opt-in service by default, which would drastically reduce the back-end load. Similarly, you could also set up a notification service that only alerts a user to replies to their own specific comment.

As far as I'm concerned, being able to track comments using an RSS feed is absolutely useless.
