For some reason, now if someone tries to subscribe to my blog using the email widget they get a message that they have to have a WordPress account or subscription key. That's not desirable. But even if I'm logged into my account, when I try to subscribe to another WordPress blog that way it goes straight to managing may subscriptions, and the new one isn't there. That's even less desirable. Why this exclusiveness? I want total strangers to be able to subscribe to my blog, like they used to be able to.

Sounds like staff changed something, unless you've changed some privacy settings on your blog. I'd ask them directly http://support.wordpress.com/contact
