Embed Facebook

  1. I found this awesome plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/embed-facebook/

Then I found out that free WordPress.com blogs don't support plug-ins

But Raincoaster mentioned on the blogs that almost any plug-in can be done with a widget.

I was wondering if anyone has an idea on how I could do that. I tried copying & pasting the PHP into the Text Widget. But it didn't work. I just want to be able to easily embed Facebook events, photo albums & group documents in the blog:

The blog I need help with is burlingtonslam.wordpress.com.

  2. This is a "no-go". There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.COM blogs and we cannot install individual plugins.

Also note that we cannot use embeds, iframes, JavaScript widgets or forms on free hosted WordPress.com blogs as the software strips the code to preserve security on this multi-user blogging platform.

  3. Thanks timethief. I understand that free hosted blogs don't support plugins (see above post).

Perhaps the original wording of my question wasn't clear:

Is there a way to accomplish the same functionality, as the plugin I mentioned, in the form of an existing Widget?

  4. No I'm sorry there is not.

  5. I don't know Facebook well, but I believe that there are rss feeds available for at least some aspects of it. If there are rss feeds, I think you could use an rss feed in a widget. You'll need to check around Facebook to find out about that.

  6. Just found this, but be aware that it's a couple years old & FB has changed since this was written. It still may be of a little help: http://www.kristi-barrow.com/facebook-rss-feeds-what-is-available/

  7. It's actually going to be MORE useful than before, because FB is constantly moving to minimize privacy and thus offer more RSS feeds.

However, that brings up an important point: some people make comments in Place A but not Place B for a reason. When they find their comments made at Place A over at Place B, they are going to be VERY angry. I wouldn't ever comment on a blog like that and I'd de-friend the person who did it to me on FB. I'm not alone in this.

  8. Well it's for a FB group and it's related blog. I just want a simple way to get all the info (like events, photos, & docs posted by the group admin) on FB onto the blog easily.

Although the feeds idea is neat. It isn't what I need.

Thanks for the help anyways. Who knows, we may be getting our own domain and then we COULD use the plugin

If you want plugins then you will have to get a WordPress.org install and self host. A domain name purchase and domain mapping upgrade at WordPress.com is for one year and for one blog when it must be renewed. Nothing changes if WordPress.com is still free hosting the blog.

    Before Upgrading – Important Notes
Same Rules Apply – The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes or plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and you will still be required to abide by our Terms of Service. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/
