Embed No Longer Working For Excel Office Web Apps

  1. Recently Microsoft launched it's new version of Office Webs Apps, and since then the Embed of Excel spreadsheets into WordPress Blogs has not worked.

Prior to Microsoft's official launch of this update Office Web Apps, users had the option of "Opting Out" of the beta work being done. Any user who chose to "Opt Out" had no problem Embedding Excel file. If you did not chose to "Opt Out" the Embed function did not work.

Since the launch, which I believe occurred this week, it appears that users no longer have the option to "Opt Out" and none of the Embed functions work with WordPress.

In searching I found the following explanation of what I believe is the issue,

"Hi, you may already know about this but just giving you a heads up in case you don't.

Microsoft are changing Office Live documents in SkyDrive to resemble the Metro interface, they have also started offering you the option to opt in to a preview of the new Office Web Apps. I currently embed spreadsheets into my WordPress site.

I decided to opt in and then found that any new items I went to embed simply didn't appear. I noticed that the url Microsoft provide you with for the preview has changed and no longer starts http://r.office.microsoft.com, but starts skydrive.live.com and I think WordPress doesn't know yet how to interpret it.

Giving you the heads up in case this becomes a wholesale change and all of a sudden WordPress user's can no longer embed documents/spread sheets etc."

If anyone else has any information on this issue or knows of any possible solutions please let me know.

    Thank you in advance.

The blog I need help with is greymatterstats.wordpress.com.

  2. Just bumping this in hopes of someone seeing it today.

  3. How ironic. I just recommended this support doc to someone today... http://en.support.wordpress.com/excel-web-app/

I've tagged this for Staff assistance. Please be patient while they get back to you.

  4. Hi JustJennifer,

If you read my post from 9/18/2012 you will see that I was able to figure out how to make it work by "Opting Out" of the Microsoft Beta Version on Office Web Apps.

As as last week, Office Web Apps as gone live, and "Opting Out" is not an option.

The problem as it exists today is that the new, as of last week, release of Office Web Apps is creating embed code that is not recognized by WordPress.

There is something that occurs regarding "Metro Interface" that is causing WordPress to ignore any Excel embeds.

This is an issue that needs to be addressed by someone, I just don't know if it is WordPress or Microsoft.

If you have any information or suggestions they would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks

  5. There's nothing that we Volunteers can do to assist you but this thread is flagged for Staff attention.

  6. Yes I am having same problem. Except my code will work for a little while and then it goes all haywire. The excel spreadsheet shows up correct and then if I come back ten minutes later and check it it's not there. I have had the https://skydrive.live.com/embed url the whole time as I just discovered skydrive today. Hopefully this get's fixed and answer is posted soon!!!

  7. @greymatterstats @derekingui: thank you for reporting this, and sorry about the inconvenience. We are looking further into this and will post on this thread once we have an update.

  8. Hi Jenia,

Thanks for responding and I look forward to your update.

  9. is this being looked at asits holding up my blog -google docs isnt up to the job

  10. Yes this still doesn't seem to be working. Is there a workaround?

  11. The only workround seems to be to paste into Google Docs and embed from there instead!

  12. I am just bumping in hopes of getting some response to this issue.

Embedding Excel spreadsheets into our blog is a big part of what we publish, and I have been unable to post any updates for going on 2 weeks. We have tried working with Google Docs and it just does not serve our needs.

Apparently from the research I have done this is affecting many WordPress/MS Office Web Apps Users, so I would hope that we could at least get a status update. I want to reiterate, that I have no idea if this is a WordPress problem or a Microsoft problem but I have to believe that one of the two companies needs to address this. As users it is very frustrating to not know if, when, or by who this will be corrected.

If anyone as any information on where things stand with this reported issue, it would be greatly appreciated.

  13. Hello all, sorry for the trouble. The current status is that this is on our radar to look at and address, unfortunately, I don't have the estimated date when this might be fixed. I will keep you posted once I have more information. Apologies again for the inconvenience!

  14. Hi Everyone,

Apologies about the delay here, and thank you for your patience. We've fixed up the Skydrive shortcode here on WordPress.com.

The instructions on how to do the embeds has been slightly modified, so I've updated the Excel, and PowerPoint instructions and added instructions for Word .

Both the old links/format and the new format will continue to work, though I suspect that Microsoft has already started deprecating the old format on their end

Hope that helps and please let us know if there's anything else we can do.

  15. Thank you so much for doing this and posting an update.

I will go through the process now and let you know if I have any problems.

    Thanks again.

  16. This seems to be working perfectly for me now.

Once again, thanks for addressing this so quickly.

  17. Glad to hear that. Cheers :)
