I embedded a Google Calendar in line with the WP instructions, and it displayed perfectly but none of the events on the calendar are shown. It's just a blank calendar.

I don't think this is a WordPress.com problem because I added your calendar to my Google Calendar and there is nothing listed there either.
Do the events show up on the preview page on Google Calendar?

Your direction helped me to isolate the problem. I had played around with the color coding on my google calendar so much, that I was adding the events to the wrong calendar. Duh!!
