Encyclopedia- or Wiki-like blog

  1. Can I organize my blog in form of an encyclopedia (or a wiki)?

The blog I need help with is livingmathematics.wordpress.com.

  2. A Wiki ([ˈwiː.kiː]or [ˈwɪ.kiː]) is a type of website that allows users to add, remove, or otherwise edit and change most content very quickly and easily.

A blog and a Wiki are not the same at all so my answer is no.

  3. Blogs are essentially a reverse chronological order publishing tool wherein the most recent published post will display on top. You cannot change this order on a free hosted WordPress.com blog. It's designed to serve your visitors as they come to read the most recent posts and will not be inclined to trawl through hundreds of posts to locate it.

See here for the option of creating a book-like structure > http://en.support.wordpress.com/write-a-book/ Perhaps that will work for you.

Or you could use a single sticky post as an index page > http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/#sticky-posts

Or you can falsify every date-stamp before publishing.

  4. Thank you, timethief! I will try the book-like structure. I have many chapters (organized in alphabetical order) and I would like to have the following features:
    1. the possibility for visitors to make comments to each chapter - like usual
    2. to edit/update each chapter (by myself, and have maybe the updates logged)
    3. to keep the Recent Posts, Recent Comments, and Archives widgets at the front page
    4. to add new chapters (or maybe also to remove old ones)
    5. a search function (like an index in a book) would be great or maybe both: index (as an additional chapter) and search

  5. 1. the possibility for visitors to make comments to each chapter - like usual

Comments are open on every WordPress blog post or page by default.

    2. to edit/update each chapter (by myself, and have maybe the updates logged)

A blog is not a wiki. See here for user roles and adding users:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/

    3. to keep the Recent Posts, Recent Comments, and Archives widgets at the front page

Not every theme is designed to provide sidebar or footer display widgets on the main pages for posts.
    http://theme.wordpress.com/

    4. to add new chapters (or maybe also to remove old ones)

You can add new posts or pages and/or edit and delete them at any time.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/

    5. a search function (like an index in a book) would be great or maybe both: index (as an additional chapter) and search

    search widget > http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/search-widget/

The WordPress.com search engine indexes post, pages, and comments content (body text). Unless entered as text in those contents, blog name, post titles, and post/comment author names are not indexed. http://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpresscom-search/

For Topics (Tags page) searches see http://en.support.wordpress.com/topics/ This is the syntax http://en/wordpress.com/tags/canada
    See here http://wordpress.com/#!/read/topics/

For Google searches use this format and replace "keyword" with whatever word you wish:
    keyword site:wordpress.com/

    Example search string
    Queen Victoria site:wordpress.com
    results > http://tinyurl.com/csaobsx

  6. Thank you very much again, timethief! I planned anyway to do the editing/updating myself, taking into account suggestions from comments. Is there any tool which will log my own updates? Anyhow, I just started and I will surely need some time of learning-by-doing. In case of specific questions I will consult this forum again. You were of great help!!
