"Enhanced" text mysteriously adds to post

I notice that my latest post has some kind of "enhanced" text hyperlink to a win an iPad competition that keeps mysteriously attaching itself to random words in the text. I replace the hyperlinked word, only for the link to re-attach to a different word. I can't get rid of this. How does this happen? Who is hijacking the post? How can I stop it?

The blog I need help with is mongrelcitizen.wordpress.com.

I'm experiencing the same thing. I paid for an "ad free" blog and can't put my own ads on here. This seems a little shady...are we now getting a rev share or is this wordpress using new/low traffic blogs for mass ad campaigns?

Let me know if you've gotten this resolved!

  3. @mongrelcitizen @financefoxhunt
That sounds like advertising to me. WordPress.com has been running advertising on our free hosted blogs since 2006. Many bloggers do not know this because despite the fact they ticked the box required to get a free blog, they did not read the ToS. Many also do not read features page, or advertising entry in the support documents after registering their username and blog(s). Also note that as the ads do not display to us when we are logged in, and as many use browsers with ad blockers when logged out, they may not realize they are there at all. The only way to get rid of all advertising on our free hosted WordPress.com blogs is to purchase an annually renewable No-Ads upgrade.

Please post an active link to the post this is appearing in. A screenshot would be useful if you can post one http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/ (Upload it through Media->Upload in your dashboard and paste the link here for Staff to see.)

Does the enhanced text disappear when you deavtivate your brower add-ons and extentions?

Like financefoxhunt I Pay for a No-Ads upgrade to keep all advertising off on my blog. If there is advertising on my blog being displayed to mobile users then that's a breach of the contract I have with WordPress.com by purchasing the upgrade. I want a definitive answer to the question: :Is there any advertising of any kind on my blog being displayed to my visitors?" If the answer is "yes" then I want it to be removed ASAP, and I want a pro-rated extension of the No-Ads upgrade for any timeframe after that purchase during which ads were being displayed to my visitors.

    @timetheif..I paid $99 for the bundle...that includes no ads. Here's an example : http://financefoxhunt.com/hire-me/

The only link the should be there is the "track record" which goes to my linkedin profile.

These links are throughout my blog...please either fix it or let me know the revenue generated so I know what my share is (saw in an earlier post that you share the revenue with blogs generating high traffic)

@TimeTheif...sorry, I thought you were word press :) No more customer aggravation being driven to you.

  7. @financefoxhunt
I don't have an iPad. I clicked into your post and see only the "track record" link in your post. As these links are appearing when viewed on a iPad I believe it's possible that they are coming from a source other than WordPress. That's why I asked if the enhanced text disappears when you deactivate your brower add-ons and extentions. It's also why I flagged this thread for Staff attention and asked for a definitive answer above.

@TimeThief, I only saw the ads on a PC, but they're throughout the blog. The problem is, I linked to sources I genuinely believe my readers will find useful, but they may now confuse these good links with text links to avoid...it makes my posts problematic...

  9. @financefoxhunt
Wow! I did not realize you saw these enahnced text hyperlinks ie. ads on a PC. Which browser and version of it did you use please?

  10. @financefoxhunt, I just checked the hire me page you reference on my iPhone and my iPad and the only active link on that page is "track record." I see no other links in the body of that page.

I believe timethief is right that it is some App or something on your iPad that is doing this.

@ TimeThief I'm using the most up to date version of firefox on a Gateway computer, hence why I'm testy...firefox web browsing is too common to let it be.

@ thesacredpath these are the sentences with a link

"I’m always open to consulting and freelance work, relish a.." (freelance was the word)
"Maybe you’re looking for that special someone to help you craft meaningful training materials" (training is the word)

  13. @financefoxhunt, I have FF 11.0 on my Mac and in viewing your site I see NO text links except for "track record." I even scanned my mouse pointer over each line to make sure.

Turn off all your add ons in Firefox, restart it and then clear the browser cache and cookies (tools menu) and then restart Firefox again and then visit your site. There is something on your end causing this.

@thesacredpath I'd be ok with this answer, but I'm not alone in this...mongrelcitizen is another with this problem.

  15. @thesacredpath
Thanks so much for checking that out. I had the creepy feeling that this might be a browser issue. I'm running Firefox 11 with very few add-ons.

  16. @financialfoxhunt, I can't reproduce this in Firefox, on my iPhone or iPad. Your site is clean on all of them. No links except for the one you put in there.

What is the URL of the other site you are seeing the issue on?

@thesacredpath this is the url http://mongrelcitizen.wordpress.com/ but I just checked the site on my phone (android) and it looked fine. Looks like its specific computers and not a global issue

  18. Yeah, I don't know what to tell you to look for on the devices that are showing the ad links. Sorry. It has to be either an add-on, App or something.

I would also, just to make sure, run a complete virus and malware scan on your computer to make sure something hasn't slipped through.

  19. I just discovered something else.

When I click on the "track record" link which is supposed to lead to financefoxhunt's LinkedIn page, it takes me to my LinkedIn profile.

I have no idea what could be causing that, but it's pretty strange and just slightly unnerving.

  20. Clicking the "track record" link takes me to my LinkedIn page if I'm signed in, and to my own sign-in page if I'm not.

  21. That's normal behabior -- whew!

  22. Oh, good. I was getting a little twitchy trying to figure out what was going on.

@TT - so if you click the link for LinkedIn, you get your page? I was a little worried because the page that came up has my password, even though I don't have a saved password. I've always had to enter the password before.

    This just doesn't seem right, but I don't know what's wrong. ;)

  23. You were right...I had the logged in viewing my profile in there rather than a google search view of my profile. Thanks for pointing that out Shoreacres!

To all, thanks for providing clarity...I work in this industry and know how shady some publishing platforms can be...just glad WordPress isn't one of them, or a whole bunch of people would be in trouble!
