Expired WordPress hosted domain

  1. The creator of this domain, which was a blog documenting her experience with cancer, has passed away. I am a friend of her family and they asked me if I can host their domain (I own multiple websites on private servers), to which I agreed. I logged into the blog to see the domain was expired (and registered through WP). According to whois records WP has registered the domain to retain ownership of it. I want to transfer the domain and maintain full control over it for the family at my own private server, however the "80.00 late fee" is not worth it to the family.

Is there a way to pay just for the basic registration fee so I can transfer the domain to my own registrar or does the family have to unfortunately register a new unique domain? For obvious reasons they would prefer to keep the same name but not at such an inflated price. (The blog owner unfortunately passed away a couple weeks before expiration, and no one was able to address this until now).

The blog I need help with is pouringpain.com.

  3. I am sorry for your and the family's loss.

I'd like to start an e-mail conversation with you about this redemption, as I may need to send you some private account information we wouldn't want on a public forum.

Could you please make sure the email address we have on file is correct? Check here towards the bottom of the page: https://dashboard.wordpress.com/wp-admin/users.php?page=grofiles-user-settings

    Thank you.

  4. Yes the email is correct and I believe the family has access to it. Please start the convo to it and you should hear back from them or myself.

    Thanks for your help.
