I am currently unable to export this blog (for use on a self hosted wp blog) as a whole which would include image/file attachments. exporting only posts gives me the posts but no image attachments. Side caching images gives me nada..I need help with this as this site is to be live in a few days.. I'd prefer the images be hosted locally and not link back to wp.com. Please help. I've emailed support and gotten nothing.

When you import into your export file into the WordPress.org install do you not see an option to include "attachments"?
I did and I checked it.. (not my first rodeo by the way) but nothing came through as an attachment. nothing.
That's unfortunate. You will have to contact Staff. Here’s the link http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/ After you use the searchbox, under the search results, at the bottom of the page there will be a section that says “Have you found the answer to your question?” You can choose either “Yes I found the answer to my question.” or “No I didn’t find the answer to my question and I would like to contact support for help.” The no option will reveal the contact form.
have already done that 2 days ago.. no reply.. my question is still apparently zooming through the universe.
I'm sorry we Volunteers can't help with export/import issues. :(
